A is 3 days old today and we had been supplementing a bit with bottles of formula. Today my milk finally came in and she just had a freak out session where she was refusing the breast. I'm hoping it's a one time thing but I'm afraid it's a bottle preference.
It's my first day of milk coming in so I'm also afraid of not establishing a good supply. For now my plan is to start with the bottle then move to the breast and pump afterwards.
Any other tips if it is a bottle preference?

I would keep trying to latch her at the breast and follow that with a bottle. Is your milk coming out really fast? If it is, maybe hand express a bit first to slow the flow.

I would also suggest trying the breast first than finishing with a bottle. I would also try hand expressing first to get the milk flowing. Her preference may just be that she's used to getting the milk immediately at this point.

@regberadaisy: Oh I missed that she was born! Congrats! I agree to try starting with the breast, but hand expressing first. It could be that it's coming out too fast or too slow but hopefully she gets used to it?

When my milk first came in, I had a forceful letdown and he did refuse several times here and there. So it may be completely unrelated to the bottle.

@regberadaisy: my milk didn't come in for a long time so we had to supplement with formula for a few feedings and I started to notice LO rejecting the breast (not latching at all)...so the lactation consultant at LO's pediatrician's office had us switch to syringe feeding her the formula/pumped breast milk
I would nurse her for 10-15 minutes on each side then we'd offer her the syringe of formula/breast milk. She went back to nursing again pretty much right away. I think her little brain was just getting confused and not understanding the difference bw bottle and breast.

@regberadaisy: firstly, congrats! We had to take away the bottle completely for a while. So syringe feeding, then let lo suck on my pinkie finger, then try to put to breast. Those feeding did take a long time, but it was worth it. And of course pumping for every feeding he didn't latch. It should be a quicker fix for you since she is so young! Good luck!

Congrats! It may have nothing to do with the bottle. My LO didn't have any bottles and she still freaked out when my milk came in. It was almost like she was shocked that milk was coming out of there. Give her a few days, she might just have to get used to it.
