So we were hosting for Thanksgiving, and have friends that have a 5 month old (ADORABLE) baby. They are in town from London, here for one more month.
We just learned today that our 2.5 year old has RSV, and our Dr said while it should be ok to still have them come over if we keep them separated, but we want to tell them, and then suggest that they don't come, since we would feel awful if the baby got sick.
What would you do?

Isn't RSV very contagious? Even if you keep them separated, I'm guessing they would still be in the same room and your LO would be coughing.
I'd tell them and suggested they may want to keep their LO home. Of course the ultimate decision is up to them, so if they choose to join you, you shouldn't feel bad.

Awww, that sucks - what bad timing! I'd definitely let them know about it and see what they say... they might want to come regardless, but I'd assume not. (And then you can make it abundantly clear that you wouldn't blame them for not coming, and that you'll absolutely plan a follow-up get-together before they leave either way.)

I would tell them and let them make the call. I would convey what the doctor told you and say you 100% understand if they don't want to come / deal with keeping the kids separate.

yeah - I am leaning towards stressing to them that they SHOULDN'T come - even though I know they have nowhere else to go. DH wanted to let them make the call, but I would rather not risk it - it is VERY contagious.

i would strongly encourage them NOT to come. 1) stressful for you all to be keeping kids away from each other the whole time 2) still high risk of baby being sick. stinks, but it's not something i would mess with with a young babe!

I would definitely encourage them not to come. Ds got rsv when he was 12 weeks old and still has to have breathing treatments every day at almost 13 months old.

Honestly I would cancel the whole thing! Just tell them you will reschedule a get together when your LO is better. Not worth the risk

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not have a child with RSV around a 5 month old baby. We had a similar situation where we were the ones with the healthy child and we were supposed to see friends with a child with RSV. Our pediatrician and a good family friend who is a neonatologist both said HELL TO THE NO.

My twins got it at 4 months and only one required a 5 day PICU stay at the Children's hospital. My baby girl was transferred to 3 hospitals by the time she got to the Children's hospital.
I'm not exactly sure when my babies got RSV (since RSV in adults or older kids looks like a cold). I think I know when the babies could have gotten it since we went to a party with adults and kids. I can't blame or pinpoint the kid, either.
With that said, if I knew my kids had RSV again, I would not let them near any young babies. Or older kids, too.
I think it's different if your baby has a cold and you are not aware or not known that it is RSV.
My babies were preemies so they were susceptible to things like that. I traveled across the country on a plane at Christmas time with my 4 month olds so I knew the risks. Though, no one could predict that my kids would get RSV.
I would cancel the event.
Oh, I luckily had trip insurance so I was able to reschedule my flight back home and get reimbursed for it. Not sure if your friends have trip insurance or want to chance delaying their flight if their child gets sick.

I would strongly discourage them from coming. That's crappy timing, but I'm sure they'll appreciate you telling/warning them.
