DD has trouble sleeping places other than at home in her crib because we are home pretty much for all of her naps and bedtimes. Hubby and I want to leave her at Grandma or Grandpa's house overnight for a short getaway, but she just isn't good at sleeping anywhere other than her crib. Tips, suggestions?

We use a PNP with the Dream on Me mattress inside. We blackout the room and bring our white noise machine and loves/blankets just like at home. He sleeps fine.

How old? I'm in the same boat. However, we have a pack and play and before we went away on vacation I put her in there for her naps everyday to get her used to it. You could also introduce a stuffed animal/lovey at nap or bedtime so that it can go with her to different places. The other thing we use is white noise and we can bring that everywhere with our phones and play it in an unfamiliar place.

@Mrs. Goose: she's 10 months. We use white noise too and that seems to help a little, but she still doesn't sleep well. That's a good idea to get her used to the pack n play before she goes to the overnight.

@schubr03: yep, that's pretty old for sleeping in different places. I agree with also making it dark so she can't tell how unfamilar it is! You could also try doing some naps there once she is used to the pack and play-depending on how concerned you are about how she'll deal with it. I know some people would probably just drop off their kid and go, but I would stress about her reaction and if she slept well (so I would be concerned for all parties involved).

The first bunch of times we slept away from home we were with her, so mostly she was in the pack and play but we were sharing a room and did regular bedtime, just in a different place. We brought the same loveys, sound machine, etc. then by the time she ever slept away from us she was used to the pack and play. But I think it's inevitable that sleep won't be great at first.

Could your parents just stay at your house with her while you go away? Might be easier on them anyway to have all her stuff handy.

DS has never napped well at other places so now I just don't expect him to. But for nighttime sleep, we hang out with friends once a week and all put our kids to bed at whoever's turn it is,to host then just wake them up when we come home. He will go to sleep anywhere now at nighttime. Each of the three boys has taken to it differently (DS being the easiest), but now all of them will sleep at any of the 3 houses. It just takes practice.
Is Grandparents close enough that you could visit a few times and put her down there (but not stay overnight) so she gets used to the idea?

@Truth Bombs: They could stay here. But I know they are more comfortable at their houses, so since they are already doing us a favor, I like to have them be comfortable.
@sapphire: that's what we have been doing lately, but she fights it so hard. Screams in the pack n play. But we have never brought stuffed animals or anything from home. That might help.
@brownepiano: yes, they are close enough. We usually leave before bedtime so that we don't have to wake her up and then do the bedtime thing again at home. But we may have to start doing that. -
@schubr03: Whenever we come home late (after bedtime and having woken him up) we don't really do a second bedtime, we just treat it like a night waking with no talking and a little rocking if necessary.
We've tried doing naps at my in laws too and until recently (25 months) they were pretty much a mess.
