Hi all! My OB has recommended doing an SIS to diagnose some irregular periods and spotting I’ve had since giving birth to my second in 2017. I’ve had quite a few transvaginal ultrasounds so I’m not too concerned about that part, but reading a description of the exam with inserting the catheter through the cervix is freaking me out a littler just curious what your experiences have been. Is it painful during or after the procedure? Thanks!

I've had this done and it wasn't painful during or after. You just have to wear a pad after for some leakage and maybe spotting. It didn't last very long for me, maybe 2 or 3 hours I think.

@castilrm: I had one about 5 years ago. I think they recommended taking Advil ahead of time? The insertion was not painful for me. It was a bit uncomfortable/full feeling when they put the saline in but didn’t last long. Good luck and I hope you get some answers !

I’ve had two of these. I think they are supposedly more painful for people who haven’t experienced childbirth than for those who have. Felt more weird than uncomfortable.

I didn't think it was a big deal. They did warn me that there's iodine involved (I can't remember if it's in the saline or on the catheter or what) - so the liquid that leaks out later can look purple and not to be freaked out by it.

@Shantuck: that was true for me. My first one was before my first (I had to do them for IVF). It was very painful. Lots of cramping during.
My 2nd was when trying for our 2nd and I had already given birth once. I was nervous going in and when he said it was over I was like “was that it????” It was nothing - equivalent of a pap, maybe even less! -
@castilrm: I had it. It was basically completely painless. I had already given birth tho and have a high pain tolerance, but it of all my procedures (HSG, D&C, membrane sweep, cervical checks and 2 unmedicated deliveries,) it was by far the most painless!
Breathe deep and think about something else, that helps me rather than bracing/tightening for the pain.. -
@castilrm: I just had one last week for the exact same reasons as you. I've had them before during IVF but that was just a tiny squirt of saline. This one they had to pump a bunch in to expand my uterus to examine it for possible ployps or cysts. It hurt like a bitch sorry to say. It felt like one long pretty bad contraction for me. It didnt last very long (a few min) but I wanted to be honest as it was a surprise. I'm pretty tolerant of pain and have had 2 unmedicated vaginal deliveries but oof. The iodine is for cleaning the outside before inserting the catheter (standard betadine wash used in all kinds of medical procedures) so that was kind of messy to clean up. Mine showed a bunch of calcifications on my lining and a decent sized scar, maybe from my last birth in June 2017? I'm supposed to make an appt to talk more with my doc. I had one in December, and I was also worried after reading descriptions. I took 3 ibuprofen before, but I felt next to nothing. There was one tiny cramp when the catheter touched the back of my uterus, but only for a split second. I’ve never given birth, but I had my cervix moderately dialated for a biopsy about 5 years ago. This was by far the easier procedure of the two. It did feel kind of weird when they inflated my uterus, but for me it wasn’t painful. They were also more interested in my tubes than my uterus, though, so that might be part of the difference. Seriously, though, the worst part for me was the amount of liquid that came out when I sat up... Nobody likes to sit in a puddle. Hopefully it’ll be the same for you.
