How are your LO's scissor skills, and how old are they?
LO is almost 4 and I brought out some magazines for her to cut out of and she is kind of all over the place with it. She has the kind of scissor that stay open, I'm wondering if those are the best option or not. Any tips on practicing with scissors?

Your LO is still young for scissors and has more time to develop coordination but I started my LO around this age.I like the Kumon cutting book because it has thicker paper. I also focused on holding the paper with the other hand and moving it while cutting. It takes several times and weeks to practice so be patient. HOlding them right way up is one step. Opening is another. Then closing. Then using your other hand to move paper in a sweet spot.

I'm about to find out! I just bought some for my 3yo to take to preschool with him. He has never used scissors so I am curious how it will go.

@Bao: if she is new to scissors I would try training ones that help them open after you cut - both my kids learned using these - loved them!

It's much easier for them to practice if you cut strips of sturdy paper that can be cut through with one snip. As they get better you can add lines to cut on, straight and diagonal and then graduate to wider strips before moving on to whole sheets. If you look up cutting practice or Montessori scissor practice you might find some ideas.

@Cole: This is what I was going to suggest- you can get free printables that have lines so your LO can practice cutting straight lines, zigzags, curvy lines, etc. My DD is not quite 3 and we definitely aren't there yet but she loves to just chop at her construction paper with her training scissors. I figured I would just let her get the hang of how they worked and then add in some cutting practice later when she gets it more.

LO will be 2 in October and she can almost, sort of use preschool scissors. I have to position her fingers for her and she will be able to do a few cuts before losing it.

4.5 and pretty good! She wants to cut stuff out all the time.
My 3 year old desperately wants to cut like big sis but has a hard time.

LO cut half her long hair into bangs (one snip) right around the time she turned 4. (Not on my watch!). Salon cut the other half to match. She finally grew it out but it took a long time. Lock up the scissors.
