At our 18m checkup, our pediatrician said 'between 18m and 2 years'. I called the pediatric dentist at 21 months, and we can't even get in until he is 2!
Of course, when I called the dentist, she said that they like to see kids "when they get their first tooth, or age 1, whichever is sooner". I felt like she was just trying to make me feel bad because I had already told her he was 21 months old. grrr...

@bluestriped bee: We took LO before she turned two. I think th earlier they start going its less traumatic for them. Going to dentist that specializes in kids teeth makes it a lot easier too. Her first appointment went well and we have been going every 6 months since then

Kids in New Zealand are entitled to free dental care (up till the age of 18) and the local community service likes to see kids starting at around 15 months and then on an annual basis.
From what I gather a huge preportion of parents have no clue about oral hygiene so the very first visit generally focuses on good habits and education with the dentist doing just a quick look in the child's mouth.
