I was wondering for those who had a vaginal birth, did you shave, wax or trim your hair down there for your birth, or did you just leave it to grow wild (lol) and did your decision have any impact on the birth in anyway?

Well, my decision had nothing to do with my birth...but I was waxed before baby 2. The dumb thing was that I had been getting waxed for years and then once baby once came, and it wasn't as convenient to get to the waxer, I sort of let it go...ahem...so when I went to get it done at 36 weeks pregnant it was extraordinarily painful.
My advice...wax if that's what you're used to but don't start (or restart) at 36 weeks. owie.

I plan to wax as that is what I normally do anyway and is how I feel most clean and comfortable.

I'd like to clean things up down there before I give birth... but at 28 weeks I already can barely even see my lady parts, so any "maintenance" down there is kind of going out the window

planned to wax, but ended up being induced so it was au natural for me. Honestly with everything going on I totally forgot about it. I'm lucky that my legs were shaved- I did have nicely painted toes and the nurses all took notice

I'm debating this right now actually. Normally I shave, but it's getting harder to do a good job now that the bump is in the way. I'm debating waxing but like @coastinganon said, I'm not sure I want to start that right now.

I always get waxed (just normal bikini wax, not brazilian). But, after finding out i was preggo, I let myself go in that dept (plus, summer was over!) I got my first wax last weekend at 20 weeks. While painful, it really wasn't any worse than pre-pregnancy. I plan to continue to get waxed every month or so up until birth. Also plan on a pedicure the week of my due date : )

I went natural. I couldn't see it to shave it or trim it, and I'm too scared to wax. Honestly, I didn't care what people thought... things were going to be gross anyway.

Thanks for all the responses.. I cant decide what i want to do. I've never waxed so i guess now is not a good time to start. I usually shave but its getting harder and harder to see what I'm doing.. I also dont want to shave and then end up with short stubble growing back a fews later when I'm all sore down there.. I may end up just leaving it to grow. But I thought it might be easier for the doctors if its all shaved.

@Pipers Mommy: I am definitely getting a pedicure there towards the end as well b/c I really don't want my feet to be looking all nasty.
I've been shaving just the bikini area & trying to trim the rest up so it doesn't get too wild. I told the husband that he was going to have to give me some assistance, though, before we go to the hospital.

I shaved since that is what I normally do and but I am fairly sure it was a hack job because it was super hard to see what was going on down there hahaha.

@Mrsbells: If you've never waxed, I recommend you don't.... I had a Brazilian done a few years back (I'm a shaver) and it hurt like a MOFO. My wax lady told me that it's more painful for shavers to get waxed because the hair has already been growing in in different directions... The best bet for waxers is au natural to waxing...

I got my last waxing about 4 weeks before I delivered, so things weren't TOO crazy down there.
My waxing lady is really fast and my last prenatal wax wasn't bad, but I was TERRIFIED of starting up again after having the baby. (It was fine. I mean, as far as using hot wax to rip hair off your hoo-ha goes).
I don't think it really affects birthing at all. Docs and nurses and doulas have seen it all, my husband was preoccupied with other concerns, and no one else was looking. Birth and its aftermath (like, several weeks worth of aftermath) are messy, and I suppose that it's a little easier to clean yourself up if you're not sporting Rapunzel-esque locks down there, but I don't think it's a big deal.

@Lozza: Hahahah I really had to laugh when i read the part "Rapunzel-esque locks down there"

I normally shave, but that is getting difficult. I'm going to get a trimmer to make it easier.

Im a shaver, but I wondered this too and debated waxing. (although not PG yet) Not going to lie, I am cringing now but also laughing at some of your comments!

I was hairless down there when I went into labor! Good thing too since DH took pics of my LO coming out!

@winniebee: Don't leave your toes until the week of your due date! I was waiting to get mine done when my LO came 2 weeks early. So, maybe go in every 2 weeks if you can when you are closer to your due date. Your tired toes will thank you.

@Boogs: Good point! I plan on pampering myself with pedicures every two weeks in the spring since every other part of me will be pretty heinous : )

@marriedandlovingit: This is what I do now. With the trimmer, I can't accidentally make any (painful) mistakes.

I shave, and at 35 weeks it is really difficult going in literally blind to what I'm doing, but I do it anyways. I just have the hubs make sure I got most of it afterwards. I think he appreciates the effort more than any doctor will. Heck, they've seen it all anyways. But I know when I'm on my period I HATE not being shaved, or close to because it's sweaty and gross down there and in all honesty I'm afraid it'll mat worse than my dog does after a swim.

Usually I just keep it trimmed- I trimmed what I could reach/see at 37 weeks, (not much) then forgot about it. It really was a non-issue for my vaginal birth. I had a second degree tear (trust me, not nearly as bad as such a thing sounds) and it still didn't matter at all.

@CameronsMomma: LOL. my friend made her SO shave *for* her because she couldn't see. He *loved* it.

I had a c-section and they were going to shave me, but the nurse was pleasantly surprised to see that I was waxed. I was planning to have my last wax 3 weeks before my due date, but delivered 6 weeks early.
I prefer to be clean which was my motivation and I couldn't see down there anymore. And hubs was not giving me a hard time about the growing out process.

I'll be waxed, which is the usual state of affairs down there. I dunno - I don't really think waxing hurts that much, especially after the first time, and especially if you go to someone good. So much easier than shaving!
squash / 13199 posts
@Lozza: lol @ the rapunzel-esque locs comment.
I think I'm just gonna aim for at trim
GOLD / wonderful coffee bean / 18478 posts
I really didn't care what it looked like down there. I don't think anybody is going to be concerned about your hair situation at that time. I think it's a lot more embarrassing to be pooping yourself than to have some wild hairs!
pear / 1728 posts
haha I was totally bare. When my OB came in to shave me for my c-section, he goes, "Oh hey...you did a good job, I dont even need to do anything." It made me laugh lol.
cherry / 151 posts
I normally wax as it is (brazillian), but who knows what I'll do whenever I get preggo and it's say-hello-to-baby time. I'll probably either be waxed or closely trimmed.
squash / 13199 posts
I just thought of something. if you get a tear and need to have stitches, isnt it gonna be kinda hard for them to stitch you up with hair down there?
apricot / 489 posts
Oh my poor doctor. I didn't do any of the 3. I had every intention of doing so. But when you can't reach your vag. comfortably, trimming and shaving don't really seem important enough to contort to reach them. Waxing was what I thought I'd do, but there is so much pressure down there by that time, it seems like all the blood in your body has to that location, that I was afraid it'd be really painful.
grapefruit / 4400 posts
I trim occasionally (like, once a month) and I've only waxed on special occasions (maybe 3 times a year?). Soooo I'm pretty bushy most of the time. I plan on trimming until the end, but we'll see how it goes.
I'm scared of shaving because I (a) won't be able to see what I'm doing with a sharp blade and (b) I've never shaved anything before so it freaks me out to start with that.
cherry / 230 posts
@HabesBabe: It's actually not that bad. I do it in the shower, so no mirror, nothing, but I've done it in front of a mirror as well and with a mirror it's pretty easy. You're more likely to cut your finger than anything important and I already do that shaving my legs anyways.
bananas / 9118 posts
@Mrsbells: 2nd degree tear, got sutures, the doc just sutured as my tear was located more on the inside- no need to shave/remove hair. They just gave me a bottle to rinse with after using the facilities, seems to be working out fine.
grapefruit / 4400 posts
@CameronsMomma: I think I wouldn't be as paranoid if I was already familiar with shaving (I don't shave anything! My legs are pretty smooth and I pluck the 2 armpit hairs I get each week)!
