We've seen a stroller we really like, but we'd have to use it with a car seat so the baby can face us. My SIL was saying a newborn really needs to lie flat in a stroller, and not be in a car seat. What do you guys think? Did you use car seats in strollers?

We always have LO in her car seat (infant carrier) in the stroller facing us. She needs the infant padding the car seat offers to protect her neck and head for safety. We won't have her just in the stroller w/o being in her car seat for several months, certainly until she can hold her head up on her own/sit up on her own.

We always used a snap and go with the car seat. You don't want them in there for too long at a time but otherwise I think it is fine.

We used a travel system so she was in the infant car seat.

I think baby is fine to be in the car seat as long as its not for a super long time. We will use the car seat the majority of the time. But we have the UppaBaby Vista and I do love that we have the bassinet for when we are out and about all day.

We have the Britax B-Ready stroller and used the infant car seat snapped in facing us until she was 5 months. Now if we are out for long periods of time I use the toddler seat reclined to the max, but still use the car seat if it's for quick errands since its easier to transport in/out of the car. We do try not to have her sitting in the infant car seat too long when she was younger and even now, since it's very molded and I feel like she can't stretch out.

It really depends how long you leave the baby in the car seat. We usually use a snap and go but if I'm shopping for a day I'll lie her flat.

For an extended period of time, newborns should lie flat. There is concern ( ESP. In Europe) that the airway will be constricted because the neck muscles aren't strong enough to hold up the head.

I don't think it's ideal to have baby sitting in a carseat / capsule for an extended period of time, from what I've read it can effect the efficiency of the airways (oxygen intake) and isn't that great for the spine.
We specifically bought a stroller with a bassinette attachment so our wee one can lie flat when out and about for the first few months.

I've never heard that it's bad for a baby to be in carseat for extended periods of time...in fact, my son had issues laying flat when he was a newborn (perhaps due to reflux) and our pediatrician even told us it was fine for him to sleep in his carseat overnight if necessary (he sleeps in the rock n play instead).

Our pedi told us to not have Liv in her carset for extended periods of time as well. We told him she hated the seat anyhow and that we had a bassinet attachment for our stroller and he said to use the bassinet as much as possible. The carseat can restrict airflow. We ended up wearing her in our ring sling a majority of the time anyways

i've heard of people that had their kid sleep for the first 6 months in a carseat and the only thing was the kids got a flat head
i actually haven't put my kid in the stroller laying flat because it seemed less cushioned and less safe. i thought he wasn't big enough for it -
@pastemoo: we used a bassinette attachment for the stroller. We very rarely let LO sleep in the car seat, first of all he'd wake up when we moved him, second, by the time we walked up three flights of stairs, the change in motion woke him!

@looch: Yeah? We have a rule in the house: don't wake the baby!
So a few times he didn't wake up and we let him stay asleep in the car seat (when we bring it in the house). -
@pastemoo: We have that rule too, but my son has a mind of his own when it comes to sleep, lol!

Not to threadjack, but this is interesting to me and I have a question now about lying flat versus being in the car seat: What happens if you have to take a long car trip?

@ladyfingers: we had a special lay flat bassinette for the car, but we never used it because I didn't like the way it hooked into the seat belts. The site is in German, but you can see the photo to get the gist of it. It aslo attached to the stroller frame.

we have a travel system but never used the stroller yet and LO is 3 monts + but many of my friends use their carseat with the stroller for their infants.

@ladyfingers: Long car trips are different, they should be in a car seat for that. What my pedi said is to avoid unnecessary time in the carseat

@ladyfingers: We drove 1500 miles (to Canada!) with LO in the carseat. And his head is not flat and he is happy and doing well. It was 5 weeks ago.@LivsMama: Ditto. Basically if LO sleeps exclusively in the car seat, he can get a flat head.

We always put Lo in her infant seat + snap and go stroller.

For those of you who use the bassinet attachment for the stroller, I would suggest using one of the Boppy Noggin Nests for extra support. LO really did well with it - it just kind of positioned her a little better, I thought.
