Help me out: do you think the names Jackson and Max are too similar for brothers (4 years apart)? We already have a Jackson and thinking of naming our new LO Max but I worry it's too close? We sometimes call J "Jack" but never "Jacks". Our other idea is naming the new one Maxwell so it's a little different but we'd probably always call him Max. I am not thrilled by Maxwell!

I voted wrong and said go for maxwell but I meant just go for Max. I don’t think they are too similar at all.. especially if you don’t call him Jacks/Jax

So if you are yelling up the stairs, Jack and Max sound very similar. If you only call your 4 year old Jackson I think it is fine because when you yell the emphasis will be on the "son". So I'd probably stop calling my kid Jack and use Max.
FWIW, my SILs have similar names: Annemarie and Danielle. As full names they were fine, but in middle school they went by Dan and Ann. They frequently were confused at who FIL was calling and he regrets having names so similar. If you aren't a yeller or your kids are angels this won't apply to you

I would pick something different. I think you will inevitably end up calling them Jack and Max and you'll often call them by the wrong name or they'll hear the wrong name on a regular basis. I have a Maggie and a Molly in my life and even though the names aren't THAT similar, I call them both the wrong name all the time when we are all together.

I'd rethink it.
I work with three people who work closely together who are named Dana, Jana, and Jamie. It's impossible to talk about them all without pausing before saying each name. I feel like Jack and Max would be similar.

I would go for it. But I’m always calling my kids by the wrong name anyway... my two boys are almost 5 years apart and their names both start with L. What’s the worst that will happen? They both come when you call them? I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. Pick the names you like.

@KT326: Agreed! No matter what you name your kids, you will always call them by the wrong name.
My brothers (I have 3) would regularly answer to a hybrid of all their names as my parents would go down the list to figure out who they were yelling at.

so my kids are not even the same sex (boy & girl) with names that don't even sound alike (jaren & noelle)... and my husband mixes up their names all.the.time. sometimes he even accidentally calls them by the dog's name, lol.
but to answer your original question - i think jack and max go well together and are both great names, and would go for it!

I would go for it! My name and my dad's name is the pretty much the same besides one letter and, while it was sometimes mildly annoying, it really wasnt that big of a deal. I got called my sister's name all the time anyway and our names are completely different.

My girls names are similar and I like it. I feel like they "go together". The nicknames are even more similar and I am the one that created them, lol. Since I'm "mama", I call Dd1 "Mymy", and Dd2 "MarMar". Now we all call DD2 "Mar" for short.

I vote go for it if the name is what you really want.
Then again, I've called my kids each others name, the dogs name, my husbands name.....

I always say the full name when I call for him so it would never be so rhyme-ey

Thanks everyone! I feel better about the name after reading your responses.
Not sure I mentioned this but my LO actually came up with the name! I saw my husband light up and give me a look when he heard it--that's how I knew this was our #1 name!
