We also went straight to straw cups. She actually would never take a sippy. We used zoli and she picked it up right away.

Just so you don't think if it's not instant it's not working, I taught my son to use a straw cup pretty quickly. Think I read the instructions on here. I used a finger to hold the liquid in and then lifted it up to his mouth and let it flow in when he started mouthing it. Then I kept my finger on it and he would suck it out. Eventually he got the hang of it when the straw was the right way. Sippy were hit or miss since he didn't get tipping the cup.

Other option is there are certain sippys that are more like bottles to try! Good luck!

Ive had no luck with straw cups. But I've had okay luck with Nubi sippy cups with the handles on the side. They are really soft and worked similar enough to a bottle that it was really easy for her to figure out.

my first LO was not getting the sippy or straw cup. then one night we accidentally left his heat fan on high and he woke up crying and sweating--i offered him the straw cup and he drank right away. so....not the recommended way of teaching.

my second LO has tried 2 sippy cups. it's been about 1.5 weeks with the second one (avent sippy cup) and he is finally getting it.

all this to say is that while some babies take to straw/sippy cups right away, mine didn't. i just had to stick with it.

Take and toss are a good option for teaching either sippy or straw because you can squeeze the cup to help them get liquid out so they have an idea of how it's supposed to work.

LO figured out a soft-spouted sippy pretty easily around 7 or 8 months, but even now at 12 months I usually have to tip it up for her. Around 11 months we tried a straw cup (so we wouldn't have to tip it for her) and she got it right away. She REALLY likes eating from pouches, so I'm guessing knowing how to suck from those probably helped her with drinking from a straw.

We taught our son straws with the Take n Toss cups as well - just squeeze a little and it pushes the liquid up. He never got sippy cups and we just left out straw cups everywhere. He hates anything with resistance in the straw so none of the leakproof ones worked for us. He did best with Tommee Tippee and still uses straw cups at almost 2.

@paigeface: we jumped right to the Zoli straw cup. we tried a few sippys but none of them were really a hit

@paigeface: I bought probably 8 different sippy cups, including the Nuk transition cup. A Contigo straw water bottle was the winner. I wish I had started there to begin with. For the next kid, I tossed all the sippy cups except the 360 cup (mostly because I think it's cool??). I will start our next kid out on the Contigo straw water bottle And maybe offer the Take and Toss sippy cups. I refuse to buy them all again.

@paigeface: we successfully transitioned to straw cups only by 13 months. Started using them for water only at around 11.5 months.

My kids don't get sippys. B went straight to drinking from a cup and I got him a little doll cup so he could learn to pick it up. I probably need to teach E to drink from a straw cup, because she likes regular cups too but has a habit of flipping them upside down to see what happens.

@paigeface: We use ThinkBaby. I modified them to have a weighted straw so there's less waste for milk (especially breast milk!). We like them because they don't leak at all, ever!
