I usually wait unless it is really close to bedtime. The transfer thing never works for us. She wakes up every time, except for when she was small and still in the infant seat.

I have probably spent a few DAYS of my life in the car while RJ was napping. Maybe WEEKS. Thank God for smartphones and car chargers! I'd also keep snacks and magazines in the passenger seat. I always wished there was a drive-thru where you could text in your order and CC number, and they'd silently hand you your food at the window.

If my son falls asleep in the car, which is rare, I take him out of the seat and bring him to his crib. Sometimes he wakes up a bit, but I'd rather he continue the sleep in his crib.

our car was essentially a giant, vibrating bouncy chair for many months of Junior's life. it makes me laugh to think of how Tina and I tried sometimes to eat in-car meals and such while he was sleeping, or one of us sneak out of the car while the other stayed - moving super slowly and silently, SWAT-team style hand gestures to communicate... we were like two paranoid mimes in the front seats.

but he slept, and well... and that's all that matters.
