DS is approaching his first birthday at the end of the week and all of a sudden I'm extremely worried about his talking. He babbles a lot, but doesn't say a single "real" word, nor does he have made-up words for things. We've heard him say "papa" a few times, but not at DH. When we ask him "where's mommy/daddy", he doesn't look or point at us (ETA: he listens to us and responds to his name, but cannot do what we ask of him). He can wave bye-bye and hello and points at the things he wants, but he's not connecting words to things/people I guess.
How much did your LO talk at one year? Should I be worried or am I overreacting? We do have a check-up on Monday where he will get his one year shots and I'm definitely bringing this up then.

My LO was just like that. Does he understand some things you ask him to do? Give that to me or throw that etc.? I'm sure he's fine. By 15 months he had a handful of words and understood a ton. My ped said he's even a bit ahead with his language.

Your son sounds totally normal to me. My LO babbled constantly, but had maybe 1 real word at 1 year.

Sounds normal--and there is a huge range of normal. So it's hard to judge based on others. At 1 yr my Lo had 3 words. I think the babble is important!

My LO just turned one and only has two real words. He's constantly babbling. I wouldn't worry. As time goes on, you can always get him screened for early intervention if you're still concerned. Sounds right on track to me!

I was really worried about this because not talking at 1 is a "red flag" on the checklists....but my ped was not concerned. I talked to the early intervention people about having him evaluated and they said that it didn't sound too concerning yet, but that i could if i wanted. I opted to wait until his 15 month well visit, and by then he had caught up. He now has about 12 words (they aren't super clear but we can tell what he means) at 16 months, so i feel much better. If you are worried talk to your ped. Evaluation is free in most places i think, so if it will give you peace of mind you can go ahead with that. Everyone kept telling me "not to worry" and "he's fine" and i wanted to believe that was true....but lo is with me all day, and if someone is going to catch an issue, thats on me. Early intervention is really important, and i didn't want to bury my head in the sand and pretend i wasn't concerned. I wasn't ok with the "I'm sure he is fine" route. I am glad we waited a couple months though, because he really did make a lot of progress in the last 4 months. Go with your gut, and if you feel it warrants an evaluation push for it.

My Lo just turned one and she says mama and dada a lot, but I'm only about 95% sure she actually means them. She babbles and makes a lot f sounds but doesn't seem to so far connect them to things. She is just starting to respond to requests with hand motions (can you clap? Vs me clapping and saying "can you clap" at the same time). I think it's normal?

It could be normal, but for us she still didn't have any words at 15 months and that's when we began to move forward with speech therapy. I would wait a bit longer, see if you can follow some strategies to possibly improve his language exposure, then check-in with your pediatrician at your next visit.

DS just turned 1 two weeks ago and still babbles like crazy. He kind of says nigh nigh for milk (in Chinese) and mama, but it's hit and miss if he truly means me. He also kind of says mum mum when he's hungry, but that's about it. Like your LO, he does wave and blow kisses and point to things.
DS is a boy and we speak English and Chinese to him so I'm trying to supress my worry of speech delay for awhile since boys tend to be slow learners any way, never the less two languages. My younger brother didn't really talk till he was in 2nd grade and DH's nephew had a word/language explosion when he turned 4. Prior to that - nada. He was brilliant kid though because he could do 50 state puzzles when he was 2 and assemble small piece lego sets (like the complicated ones) by the time he was 3. Just didn't talk!

Thank you all for responding. I realize it's probably too early to really assess his language development, i.e. that I should give him at least another six months before actively pursuing any form of intervention (although I will still talk to the ped about it next week). Like @Mrs. Lion said, I feel a lot of responsibility to catch any thing that might be the matter because I'm his mom!

My LO is almost a year and I do not think he has any words with meaning. I am having trouble telling if LO is using words with meaning.

My girls were polar opposites in terms of early talking. I always think it's wise to check with your doctor if there are any concerns, but it's also good to step back a little and remember that there is so much normal at that age. Very great variation. My oldest didn't have many words at all until she was two, but she is now better-spoken than most of her peers. So if there is no underlying issue to address, it doesn't have to mean anything negative for the future.

Babbling is huge at that age. I think my LO had 3 sorta words at 1. We go through phases where receptive seems to advance, then expressive...I worry, then he has a mini explosion.... So basically, I think he sounds very normal.

I think boys tend to be slower vocally than girls too. Xander was just saying "Mama" "Dada" and "Uh-oh" at that age (and "uh-oh" was definitely not used correctly) and LOTS of babbling.

Our pedi says they don't expect words till 15 months.

He sounds completely normal to me! DS only had "mama" and "dada", and a lot of random babbling. After his 1st birthday he had about 4 words total... and it stayed that way for a couple months.
I wouldn't worry too much yet, especially since he is babbling a ton, pointing to things, and has good receptive language.

Sounds in the normal range. We had no word at 12 months just a lot of babble. I know it is impossible not to worry, just keep an eye on it.

I'm starting to get a little worried but they do babble all the time, seem to follow my questions/commands pretty well and imitate conversation inflections so I'm hoping it's just a twin thing (anecdotally, twins tend to be behind in talking) but it still worries me!

I've learned from personal experience that there is such a huge range for speech development. My son had 10 words at 18 months and not many more at 24 months and just started talking in 2 word sentences when he was closer to 3! With speech therapy and tons of work at home, he's a non-stop chatterbox now (he's 4). Everyone is shocked when I tell them that he was speech delayed.
I know it's hard not to worry though. The best thing you can do for your child is to continue talking and communicating and describing everything. He's still really young and has lots of time to develop.
