We use the OXO tot twist lid straw cup. It isn't leak-proof but it's close. LO doesn't seem to have a problem drinking out of it, though the straw is a bit bigger than the standard straw. The Thermos Foogo is pretty good, too but it's more leaky than the OXO.

The thermos foogo is the only thing I will put milk in on the go- the only times ours has leaked is when my LO is intentionally shaking it out (or when I didn't reassemble it correctly). I use a contigo cup as her primary water bottle but thats probably a little big for just learning.

We taught her to use a straw with the playtex straw cup that had a squeezy center bit, but they are hard to find, and it sounds like your LO doesn't need that extra help, plus it does leak.

We use the pura Kiki. The straw is way easier to drink from then the munchkin. It does spill a little more but not badly and not unless it's turned completely upside down. There is a cover that comes with it though so that helps.
It's also metal so I would think it would keep stuff cold longer then plastic.
Best part is that it's completely non toxic. The straw top (which you have to buy separately) is made from medical grade silicon.

Oxo Tot and the Foogo are the two that, to me, are most like a traditional straw cup. Not much resistance when you suck. More secure but definitely still not spill proof.

Thermos Foogo or funtainers

Zoli was by far the easiest when DD was learning to drink out of a straw cup. They are a PITA for milk though so I only put water in them and kept milk in her bottle until she was old enough to drink from a "harder" straw cup that handled milk better

LO also didn't understand sippy cups for a long time and finally succeeded with the Munchkin weighted straw cup (http://www.munchkin.com/click-lock-trade-weighted-flexi-straw-cup-7oz.html).

It's not insulated, though - we like this Gerber Graduates one best for travel (http://www.target.com/p/gerber-graduates-advance-1pk-9oz-insulated-straw-sippy-cup/-/A-14899617#prodSlot=medium_1_2&term=gerber+graduates+advance). It's a little bit easier to drink from than a Foogo, but stays cold almost as long.

can someone enlighten me as to why milk ALWAYS leaks out of every straw cup we own???
