What do you do when you're stuck in a hotel room with a toddler? It's 8pm. (S)he should be going to sleep. You are stuck in there with him/her.

So this is after said toddler is asleep? I would probably watch TV and paint my nails. Depending on the hotel I'd order room service!

@jape14: can you do all that while they sleep? I'm impressed! My daughter is a light sleeper!

@mediagirl: Once my daughter is out I can do TV. Do you have a tablet with you, stick in some ear phone and connect to Netflix if the hotel TV is too loud. Or on your phone? I usually just scroll here, FB, and Pinterest when I'm bored!

@mediagirl: I haven't attempted it with a toddler yet, haha! in the case of a light sleeper, I'd probably BYO treats (candy + some wine?) and watch TV on my ipad with headphones. painting your nails is totally still possible though! those tiny little desk lamps at hotels aren't too bright for kids sleeping but should be enough directed light for a passable manicure.

@LuLu Mom: @jape14: I'll have to try the headphones and tablet thing once she's asleep. I really just want my wine and HGTV (we don't have cable at home!!) Haha.

I sat in the bathroom on the toilet playing with my phone until she fell asleep. Then I sat on a chair on the other side of the hotel room and played on my phone for a while before going to bed early. It was a super exciting night. Plus side was we were both up and at em nice and early for our drive home the next day.

@mediagirl: by the time we finally get her to sleep, we're usually worn out from struggling with her and we pass out. We have to stay super quiet because she's such a light sleeper. I have no idea how my parents did it!
Do you have a little fan or something you can run to use as white noise?
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
@BabyBoecksMom: we are taking our white noise machine!

I would probably watch some episodes of a show on Netflix on my phone, with my headphones on.

After she's asleep, we usually can use our phones quietly. My husband has been successful in turning the tv on quietly as well. Particularly if the light from the screen can be aimed away from her.
Our most recent trip though, I just passed out.

I'd watch shows on my tablet with headphones and drink some booze and eat some snacks

I usually just go to sleep. H won't sleep if the TV or any lights are on. It's super awesome. But now we just try to make sure we can get a suite.

@mediagirl: Is she going to be in a bed or a pack n play? The couple of times we've stayed in hotels with my daughter in a pack n play, we've put the pack n play in the closet with the door open. It helped because she couldn't see us while she was settling down and we could watch TV without having to hide under the covers.
Otherwise, I honestly just go to bed early with her!

This happened to be recently and I gave myself a facial... exfoliate, 20 min mask, serum, the works. Then I used my tablet for a while. It was actually nice!

When she was a baby we would have her fall asleep with the TV on in the background so we could still watch it when she was asleep (just made sure her cot was out of line of sight of it!). Now she's a bit older we just keep her up until we are ready to go to bed, like 930-10ish.

We try and get a suite if at all possible. Nothing fancy - just Hampton In. Or Hilton Garden Inn. He goes in one room and we go in the other. Then we watch shows on the laptop and eat dessert or read. And bring as many white noise machines as will fit in your suitcase

Hah- sleep! We did a family vacation where we all slept in a one room hotel room, and even though we'd put him down at 8, he didn't fall asleep until closer to 9, and I was so tired anyway I didn't mind.
I kept the kitchen stove hood light on, and did read a little bit, but otherwise I also would have watched a show on my phone or iPad with headphones.

@Mrs. Pen: We do the same thing. He ends up staying up later because he's sooo excited to be in a hotel room, and by the time he's sleepy so are we.

Athens first time we watched tv on the lowest volume possible. But at his age right now, he was so hard to get down that he was up late and we just went to bed at the same time. Totally boring! A tablet would probably work for us but only after he was really asleep. We've also gotten rooms next to friends and at in the back at a table with the door cracked. That was the best option!

On our most recent hotel stay, my husband laid with her in one bed (we had two queens) in the dark till she fell asleep while I read HB and stuff on my phone in the bathroom.
After she was asleep, I went back in because our plan was to watch TV, but DH had fallen asleep for real, so I watched TV by myself on super low volume, haha.

@BananaPancakes: yeah since we were on vacation some nights we'd stay out pretty late and we'd all just crash together when we got back to the hotel. Initially I was wondering what I'd do for a couple hours but it worked out.

We have been doing this for almost a week! We read or use our tablets. We've also been going to bed early because we are getting over jetlag and super busy during the day.

DD is a super light sleeper as well. Which is why we usually try to get a condo-type/bedroom type arrangement. Always bring the sound machine! This past weekend, I would either lay down to sleep or like @Foodnerd81: go in the bathroom and play on my phone until she was asleep. After she's asleep, I can only play on phone or tablet and/or go to sleep early. But our LO goes to bed much later than 8.
