At what age did you or will you allow your child to watch superhero-type shows? I mean the ones that are geared for children, not the movies. Superhero Squad, Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers, etc.?

@mamimami: I let my son watch them way too early! (He's five now.) By and large, the superheroes are decent role models - if a bit violent. But the supervillains do all sorts of crazy things and I've noticed that that's the behavior I see my son imitating!

@mrbee: That's kind of what I worry about. I think the messages are fine but the behavior and the violence concerns me a bit. If you had to do it over again, what age would you say?

@mamimami: I don't think we could've stopped it much longer than we did! He was just so incredibly drawn to superheroes. He saw a picture of the Incredible Hulk in a magazine, and just started asking question after question about him!!
If I could do it again, I would be more careful about which shows we watched. I don't think Superhero Squad is a great show, and that's the one that skews the youngest. Transformers Rescue Bots isn't too bad - there usually aren't any bad guys in the episodes; just situations that they have to deal with.

DD loves Super Buddies. She loves them so much, she's been tying anything with a string attached (like a box liner) to her neck and saying she's 'superdog'! I got her a cape on Etsy and she runs around saying 'E is superdog'! It's funny because Super Buddies is the only superhero show she's been exposed to - to her it's the original
Eta: She's 2.5

He watched toy story at 2, Star Wars at 3, found batman on netflix at 3.5. We tried justice league at 3.5 but he had no interest. He has bigger friends so he knows all the heros including ninja turtles but hasn't chosen to watch them. He still gravitates to wild Kratts and super why at almost 4. We don't have many problems with violence and we talk about it. He has a shoot gun and he knows we don't point it at people or dogs. Only bad guys and those are defined as shooting guns back.
We have debated the right time for the new live action shows because those are soooo violent.

Following! My older one is obsessed with superheroes. For now the only show I have let him watch is Super Why. LOL! We have gotten some Spider-Man books from the library.

I think Super Why and Rescue bots are in their own category. Innocuous, no real bad guys, etc. I am more worried about the more traditional Spider-Man, Hulk etc. cartoons.

My son got into it just as he turned 2 yrs old. I really wished he was around 5 when he got into it.
