Is there a difference in taste? I think sweet potatoes are way smaller, right? I don't think I regularly see sweet potatoes in our supermarkets, just Yams.
It's usually interchangeable for me in recipes.

I don't notice a difference in taste, but then again we usually only have sweet potatoes around here.

True yams are extremely hard to find. Almost everything you see in a grocery store is a sweet potato of some variety. In my experience, people tend to call the white ones sweet potatoes and the yellow-orange ones yams, but the only real difference between them is color. I recently had some purple sweet potatoes that were awesome!

I was wondering this earlier because my mom makes "candied yams" but they always tastes like sweet potatoes to me!

@PurplePeony: Japanese sweet potatoes are purple and they are my favorite! They're way more starchy starchy and mushy than the Yams in our grocery store. The Yams are also also extreme hard raw whereas the Japanese sweet potatoes aren't.

@blackbird: haha I love kitchn! I also love "true" Yams! I grew up eating them @PurplePeony: . Super common in Chinese food so they're every where in Chinatown. I love them in hot pot!

I think yams are more orange in color and sweet potatoes are more yellow. I have no idea the taste difference.

Interesting. I've never seen the white colored sweet potatoes, only the orange ones. And we call them sweet potatoes and eat baked sweet potatoes, sweet potato casserole, etc. I'm in the south, so I wonder if this is a regional thing.

Interesting! I always thought the orange ones really are yams, and never even knew there are other sweet potatoes...

Does this help? I think we tend to use the words sweet potatoes and yams interchangeably for different varieties.

@simplyfelicity: You're blowing my mind! I've never seen a sweet potato that looks like that!? I have some labeled as sweet potatoes in my kitchen but they're orange!
