I'm staying away from caffeine so I'm drinking decaf green tea, but what are other teas that are safe to drink during pregnancy?
I've heard that some herbal teas aren't safe, correct??

I think licorice root in tea is to be avoided. Otherwise, I'm following!
ETA: This only matters, I think, since many herbal teas (Tazo, Celestial seasonings, etc) have really complex ingredient lists...

My ob said any herbal tea in moderation was fine, like as long as you're not drinking like 6 cups a day of anything the amount is too smAll to matter

My understanding is that mint teas and rooibos (red tea) are fine.
@nana87: I like that way of thinking! The less paranoid I feel, the better.

I stayed away from teas that had hibiscus in it, which happens to be a lot of the lemon-y herbal teas that I like. Apparently it can cause miscarriage. I'm sure it's only in large amounts, but I didn't want to chance it, especially since I wasn't sure how much of it was in the teas I was drinking.

@nana87: Exactly this! My midwife said the same thing. I specifically asked about ginger and peppermint (my favorites!) and she totally okayed those. I've tried to stay away from blends that have tons of stuff in them, just because I'm not confident I can track what's going on with those.

I should also tell you--when I started getting killer headaches early in the second trimester, I went back to drinking one cup of black tea every morning. I usually do Lady Grey, which has like 30mg of caffeine in it. Way under the 200/250mg recommended cutoff!

I think any tea you're going to buy at a grocery store is fine.
White teas are very low in caffeine, and rooibos is caffeine-free (naturally, unlike the chemical process in decaf).

Hmm.... I drank a ton of herbal tea while I was pregnant. I had no idea it wasn't safe. But hey, my child is the picture of health. I think I had mostly peppermint, lemon, chamomile, and sometimes ginger.

I was comfortable drinking ginger and peppermint tea. No blends.

I'm a tea drinker. I'm doing Decaf PG Tips and chai tea throughout pregnancy. I'm not a fan of herbal teas.

Green tea actually isn't recommended because it can interfere with the absorption of folic acid. I drank mainly black, chamomile, and mint teas (but mint tea isn't good afterward if you're breast feeding because herbs in the mint family can dry you up!). Up to 200 mg of caffeine is supposed to be okay, so I didn't really worry about that because I never drank enough to come close to that limit.

@PurplePeony: Oh man I didn't know that about green tea! Luckily I've only had 1-2 cups per week, so not much at all.
@cascademom: So Chai tea is fine? I was holding off just in case it wasn't! I have one of those chai tea mixes, so probably different and mainly sugar anyways!

My doctor didn't advise me of anything but I heard herbal teas should be avoided. I do drink green tea and white teas but not a lot of blends.

@MrsBrewer: that shouldn't be a big deal, I think they just didn't want me drinking multiple cups per day. I think there's some debate about the extent to which it actually affects the folic acid absorption, but I like other teas better so it was pretty easy for me to just not drink it. I think I did have a cup a handful of times at Japanese restaurants, though

@MrsBrewer: I drank chai tea lattes throughout my last pregnancy. I avoid green teas during pregnancy though, just a personal thing. My OB told me to limit my tea and coffee intake to 2 cups max a day while pregnant.

My OB okayed anything from a regular grocery store in moderation. I drank caffeine free Lipton blackberry vanilla.

I drank sweet tea (black tea) from the second trimester until the end. There isn't much caffeine, so neither I nor my doctor felt like it was an issue.

I drink all kinds of tea. Just 1-2 cups a day so I don't stress. I love green mint, mint, white pomegranate, orange or lemon, black vanilla, and peach

I drank mint and red raspberry leaf tea but avoided green and hibiscus.

I read that rooibos was safe so I had that occasionally when pregnant. Celestial Seasonings has a really good Madagascar vanilla rooibos tea. I put a dash of milk and honey in it - so good!
Also had chamomile sometimes in the evening.

Look what I found at the grocery store yesterday! I'm having a cup right now
