It really depends. From 2008-2012 they were cutting positions every year. This year my district has had a shortage and has had trouble finding classroom teachers and licensed long-term subs for things like maternity leaves. I know this is not the case in many districts though. Districts with better reputations for salaries/benefits/school climate are always more difficult to break into. As far as the specialized position it really depends on what it is and how many other people are certified to do it. Unfortunately specialized positions are always the first ones to be cut when there are funding issues. in my district many teachers with specialized degrees had to go back in the classroom (not sure if you will be licensed to do that). I teach elementary but there is always a higher demand for middle school teachers so it might be advantageous to be certified in those grades. I really can't say much about private schools.
