What was your baby's experience with weaning off breastfeeding (by their choice, so to speak)- when, how did you know it was time, if you went to formula, solids etc?

I'm not sure what you're asking.
My first weaned at 15 months. I didn't offer one day and she never asked for it. She moved to solids and WCM.
My second weaned at 10 months when I was seven months pregnant and had reduced milk supply. She refused bottles and went to WCM in a sippy with a substantial amount of solids.

@oliviaoblivia: You answered my question! The thing is I've noticed my 7.5 month old is not very interested in BFing as he LOVES solids and eats so much. II've heard of babies just deciding they don't want to nurse anymore and I'm wondering if that's what;s happening. Maybe I should limit the solids ...? I want to nurse for at least a year with no formula...

I weaned my DD when she was 13.5 months. I do remember that she went through a phase between 7-9 months though when she became not as interested/easily distracted. I think it's because she was noticing her surroundings more. I just made sure to keep offering because I wanted to EBF for 1 year.
Weaning her was super easy though, and I just slowly reduced the number of feedings.

@MrsBrewer: exactly, he's become so aware of everything lately... well he refuses the bottle have the time, so he better keep nursing!!

@pachamama: Just keep offering! It always helped to go somewhere quiet too, with no/little noise (in the nursery, make sure TV is turned off in the living room)

@pachamama: I would cut back on the solids, and try to nurse in a dark quiet room with fewer distractions. Until babies are a year old breastmilk or formula should still be their main source of nutrition.

My baby is 8 months old and a super distracted nurser. She's also really fast when she is focusing. So I just bring her into a quiet room to nurse every time. Sometimes it's like 5 minutes, or even less, but my breast is noticeably less full so I think she is just very efficient and I have a fast letdown. Then she wants to get back to the action. I'm glad she's fast since I have to lock her big sister out of the room to have any chance of getting her to eat.
But my older one did self wean- she stopped asking or seeming as interested in nursing, dropping one session at a time, until I would have to ask a few times if she wanted milk at bedtime. So one night I didn't ask and she went to sleep without it and that was it. But she was 19 months then.

That's pretty normal around 8 months. You should offer breastmilk before solids still and may have to do it in a quiet, dark room to reduce distractions.

@pachamama: I nursed my kids until they decided to stop at 13.5 & 14.5 months. Both were down to nursing mornings, evenings and MOTN by 9m or so because they ate solids for breakfast, snack, lunch, snack and dinner. They had water with their meals.

So helpful ! I can tell he is getting much more efficient, so he's nursing shorter. It just varies a lot from day-to-day. We'll keep chugging along.
