Was anyone able to only use a mini toilet seat on your toilet, rather than the mini potty? So much advice says to get both, but it would be amazing to get DS used to just the toilet and not have to clean out a little potty, if it will work!

Yup! Although we bought both he only ever used the seat insert. We waited until he was older (2.5-3) to start though. Get a high stool, they need it for pushing #2

Daycare trains at 2 and told us to buy neither and just sit him facing backwards on the potty. She's been doing it for 20+ years so I assume it works.

Not with DS but with DD- she refused the little potty so we used a baby Bjorne insert on the big potty - she was able to put it on and take it off herself

We did, love it. We also have a step around the base of the toilet called the Little Looster.

WE did, we bought the little potty but she hated it, she wanted to sit on the big toilet (and be able to flush) so we bought a seat for it and she's been doing that ever since. Our only complaint is she refuses to sit on it without her seat, so when we are out in public we have to do a foldable travel seat, otherwise it is a meltdown!

We used the big potty because I wanted to have her comfortable using any bathroom. If we do not have a seat I usually have her hold on to me (she loves saying I'll hold on to you mommy) and she does her business.

We only used an insert. We are on the go a lot and I wanted her to use any regular toilet. Now at just over three she most often will sit sideways on the toilet. I highly recommend replacing the entire seat with one of these (http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product/mayfair-round-white-nextstep-child-adult-toilet-seat-with-whisper-close/1041549216?mcid=PS_googlepla_nonbrand_bath_&adpos=1o2&creative=39230266789&device=c&matchtype=&network=g&gclid=CO2VqcnDxcECFc1AMgodJhEALQ) This isn't the exact one we have (ours came from Lowe's). We got this later in the game, but it makes life even easier. No insert to store somewhere.

WE borrowed a mini-potty from a friend and Little P wouldn't even sit on it. I like the insert for the toilet a lot better. And a lot easier to travel with, etc.
