I have flown a lot with my babies as infants and with my toddler. We've taken at least 1-2 flights per year for the past 4 years since DD1 was born and I would say that traveling before the age of 1 is much more enjoyable than after 1. 7 months would be a great time to fly

We went to phuket with LO when he was 7 months old. We were living in the region at the time so it was just a short 1.5 hour flight. We stayed north of patong in kata noi because it was less crowded. We had a fantastic time and LO loved being on the beach. The thing i worried most about traveling with kids to places like that is feeding them. But at that age, he wasn't eating table food yet so we brought all his food along with us. We had also gone on separate trips to Australia and Cambodia around that time and LO did great as well. He was really easy to take on trips at that age.

I think being there would be awesome, but having recently flown with a 7 month old, it was tough. They're super squirmy at that age. Maybe you will luck out and have a good plane sleeper, but my LO is not used to napping anywhere other than his crib or carseat, so the most we would get is 40 min catnaps.

@cupcakemama: Unless you're going pretty far off the beaten track, you can find bottled water and baby-friendly food very easily. (Pretty much anything my kid was eating at 7 months is easily available, plus they sell jarred baby food at supermarkets)

I'm hoping to take LO to Southeast Asia sometime in the next couple years (as soon as finances and work schedules align), and while I didn't have a child when I lived in Southeast Asia for a couple years, plenty of my friends did and commented all the time about how baby-friendly the region is.
Re: flying, I had several friends comment on how great it was to fly Thai Airways with kids- they said that they often had flight attendants coming by and offering to take their babies off their hands for a bit so the parents could relax.
I do think that taking a newborn sounds a lot easier than taking a 7 month old.... most things that occupy a newborn's day (eating and sleeping) can be done on the plane, whereas a more active 7 month old would be harder to occupy. That doesn't mean I wouldn't do it... just that I'd think hard about scheduling and stopovers and such and try to maximize time spent flying during the night and minimize time spent on the airplane during waking hours.
Once there, though, I think Thailand is a great place to vacation with babies- it's a super baby-friendly culture. If you end up going and want recommendations for specific places to go/stay with kids, let me know and I will ask around with friends who still live in the region!

@plantains: I was actually thinking more of when you bath the baby. I don't know about you but I find it hard to keep LO from swallowing some water. And yes, even a small amount is enough.

Having lived in the region and travelled extensively there it's not somewhere that I would choose with an infant. I know some people love going there with babies but I can't think of anything worse - I would be paranoid the whole time.

Yes you can buy food from the supermarket for baby but you have to be able to find the supermarket and that can be a pain when you are travelling rather than living somewhere.

Yes food a 7 month is readily available but I would be worried about how it's prepared the whole time. To each their own.
