I heard this one on the playground today, and wasn't sure how to respond. I guess my main thought was, "I wonder if that's true!"
Is it true for you and your kids? What about for your own family, back when you were growing up?

Interesting. My older brother is my mom's best friend. So, I guess it's true for my family.

Not sure if you're talking about looks or who they're most like, but my sister looks like my dad, but she's most like my mom, and I look like my mom but I am most like my dad. And my brother looks like my mom but he acts just like my mom's late brother.

I don't have kids yet but I was very much a mommy's girl and I was first born.
My sister was a tom boy and daddy's little girl. She was the second and youngest in my family.
So I guess for us, it was true.

I can see that it isn't true for my BIL and SIL. Their 1st is all about the dad (a boy). Not sure about their 2nd yet (girl). She doesn't seem to be stuck to either of them in particular so far.

Hurmm. DH's pretty sure our LO will be a daddy's girl. Only time will tell!

Developmentally, the theory is that at least in appearance, the first born tends to looks like the Dad because it proves (genetically) the child is indeed from that particular man.

Clementine - isn't that so true? All the first little ones I've met lately have looked JUST like dad, and all the second borns have looked like Mom.
As far as kids favouring mom or dad, I'm oldest and best friends with my mom, while my sister has always gotten along better with my dad.

I've also heard (even from my doctor) that first babies look like dad. It's true of many of our friends, and I hope that's true for us too! I want our little baby girl to have daddy's hair and eyes. (I do hope she gets my skin though for the teenage years. DH still gets horrible acne to this day, whereas I barely had a zit in my entire life.)

@Redsmarties, yep, that's the world on the street! I'm not sure of the exact name of the theory, but I know it exists.
