Sounds more like an old school woman's name, but i could see it going both ways.

I wouldn't use it bc it's not my personal style, but I'd think it was cute. I immediately think boy bc of Merle Haggard

My friends mom is Myrle. It seems like a mom name to me and not ready for a come back...

It's not my favorite. I knew a girl named Merrill, and prefer that.

I have a 70 year-old neighbor named Merle. He is awesome, and my 3 yo calls him "Mr. Merle." So I think boy, but also, eh.

Not my style. I work in a seniors home and we had a Merle that lived there. She was a miserable old woman. haha. I think of it more feminine than masculine.

Makes me think of The Walking Dead, and unfortunately Merle wasn't a nice character...

My mind goes right to Haggard. Thanks, dad. It's definitely not my style.

@T.H.O.U.: lol I just asked my husband this question about 10 minutes ago!! I think it's too old.

I kind of know a girl named Merle, and she hates it. I always see it as rhyming with Pearl, and associate it with a man's name.

It reminds me of The Walking Dead and definitely has a male connotation to me.

I know a very sweet older woman with the name. I wouldn't use it. I like Meredith!

Reminds me of Merle (the big racist guy from the Walking Dead).
But also reminds me of Meryl (pronounced merril) a little cat-girl character from an anime I used to watch.

I definitely think of Merle Haggard. Sadly (and coincidentally,) he passed away today on his birthday.

@oliviaoblivia: Mine too
@T.H.O.U.: It's not really my style, but I like Meredith or Marin.

I know a fun loving 55ish lady named Merle, and she totally rocks the name. BUT, not my style (none of the old-fashioned style names are, though).

Only Merle I know personally is a childhood friend's mom who is now in her 60s. She was kind of a PITA, honestly, so I wouldn't personally use it. I definitely think of it as female instead of male, though.

@oliviaoblivia: @twodoghouse: When we adopted our dog the volunteer at the shelter glanced at his papers and told us his name was Merle. So we were calling him that for a while and then one of the actual employees was like yeah no that's the description of his coat. Haha. But we almost stuck with that as his name just because it was funny.

It reminds me of Merle from walking dead too, male, and definitely not a good guy

I feel like my mom had a great uncle named Merle. It's not my style.

I immediately thought of TWD... it's definitely a boy name. I'm not a huge fan! I like Meryl for a girl though.

@simplyfelicity: Yes! I posted today in honor of him because its all over the news here in the South. Not a name we are considering.
pear / 1837 posts
I like it for a boy name, reminds me of Merle Haggard, and I do know someone who has a 4 year old named that. But I'm in the south.
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
I don't love it, but I can see it being kinda edgy/cool for either a boy or a girl actually.
