What do you gift or tip for people such as your cleaning service? We have one cleaning lady that is not through a company. I can't decide/remember what is appropriate to gift.

We have regular service and we gift in December by giving the normal fee as a bonus (so if we normally paid $100, we would pay the normal $100 plus $100 gift for a total of $200) at our last cleaning of the year.

We pay a little more than $100 for ours to come once a month. We tipped $100, a bottle of wine, and homemade banana bread.

We are gifting the same amount we normally give her ($150), but in Target gift cards.

I don't mean to hijack the thread but I'm curious to know how people have come up with the 1x cleaning tip amount, only because i don't know anyone in Canada who goes by that rule. When i brought it up with friends from different circles, they looked at me like i was crazy.
When we had a cleaning service, a once a month clean cost us a little over $200. The owner and her helpers would do the clean - so how would i distribute the tip? $400 would be quite a bit to swallow.

@Freckles: DH has several friends that use the same maid (they referred her to us), so I think we're just keeping up with what others did before us.

@Freckles: it's what my husband was doing when I met him - since he asks his mom for advice on everything, I assume she told him to do it. Most of my friends don't have a regular cleaner but a few have hired our regular cleaner 1-2x per year and they ask me for a recommendation about tipping - I just tell them what we do for our different situation and nobody has responded that it seems strange.

I was going to tip ours around $100 and a nice bottle of wine. We pay her $150 for our cleanings, which are sporadic - sometimes numerous times a month, sometimes once a month depending on needs.

@MaryM: @danda: Thanks - i wonder if it's also because the tipping culture is much bigger in the US, or the people i know (whether they be from here or Europe) never grew up with a housekeeper/cleaning service?

We have a cleaner come 2x a month for $90 each time. The service sends a team of cleaners, sometimes 2, sometimes 3, rarely the same people. So I put a $20 in a card for each cleaner that showed up this week. Our lawn guy who comes every week for $85 a month we gave $50.

I tip 2 cleanings worth plus a small gift and a food gift. Our lady is so sweet and thoughtful, she remembers our birthdays and brings us homemade cakes to celebrate. I also WAH when she's cleaning, so I've gotten to know her.

ours comes every 2-3 weeks and i gave her a fourth of her usual pay as extra. i think any extra is appreciated and i wasn't gonna sweat it!

@Freckles: i've always heard a week's worth (although i didn't do that this year!) so depends on how often they come, i think.
