How much do you leave for hotel housekeepers? Leaving on a trip in less than 2 weeks and we don't ever travel, so trying to find the average!

If I remember, $2/day and I write a short note so the housekeeper knows the tip is for them to keep.

Depends on how fancy the hotel is and where it is. Usually $2 or $3 a day (more at, like, a resort) and on a daily basis instead of all at the end because different people might clean the room every day.

Honestly, I don't usually tip housekeeping unless I'm at a super fancy resort.

$5/day lately. We've been traveling less and staying at nicer places when we do. In the past, we stayed at budget places and usually tipped $2-3/day.

Generally, I leave a tip on the last day, which probably isn't fair, considering it's probably not the same staff.
If you're super organized (and I am not, I've never done this), one thing you can do is make up envelopes ahead of time to leave each day. Something like $3 per day.

@looch: that's actually a good idea...I love to be organized so maybe I'll do that now

We actually decline housekeeping usually. Just more comfortable having no one else going in and out of our rooms. We just request towels as needed and tip whoever brings them.
So we leave one tip on the final day, usually $5-10 depending on length of stay and fanciness of hotel.
If you do plan on having someone come in daily, I would leave a daily tip since the staff could change daily. $2-3 would be fine, in my opinion.

Somewhere between $2-5/day depending on the hotel (nicer ones I leave more, bigger room to clean I leave more, if they leave my kid towel animals or whatever I leave more). I also always pick up all towels and leave them in the tub and clean up the room so they have less work to do.

Stole @looch: idea and made up thank you cards with $3 in each. Thank you!

Honestly, I never tip either. If we left a disaster in the room, I'd leave a tip to make up for the extra work we were leaving, but we're typically in one night and gone in the morning, so we clean up after ourselves fairly well.

I don't think I've ever tipped housekeeping, I consider it part of the nightly room rate I pay.

@alphagam84: On the one hand, you're right and it should be. On the other hand, housekeeping is a hard job, tough on the body, generally performed by women (often immigrant women) who are paid minimum wage, so it's a nice thing to do. I figure if I can afford to stay in a hotel I can afford to pay an extra few dollars and if everybody did that it would substantially improve the take home pay of the housekeeper.

Like Sweetiepie, we decline housekeeping during our stay (we rarely stay longer than 3 nights anywhere) because I don't like the idea of strangers in my space.
We leave a tip at the end of the stay. We used to leave $3 or so; now that we have a kid (more mess) we leave $5.

@alphagam84: @erinbaderin: I think it's similar to tipping anywhere, a restaurant:you are paying for the food, but you still tip for the service. A hair cut, you pay for the hair cut but tip for the service. Cleaning people's messes stinks lol

We must be horrible, we've never done this and didn't know it was a thing!

We always decline housekeeping. I like to put my stuff out and not have it be moved. We also don't make a mess of the hotel room so it's never seemed necessary. We just call down and ask for things if we need them. We then leave $5-10 on the final day.
