I have only done this if my kids have strep. I buy dollar store ones and toss after one use and after they have completed antibiotics I buy a new one for repeat use.

I've never done anything. If they had strep I would probably just toss it.

@KT326: same. Never done anything but we have never had strep. Come to think of it maaayybe I threw it out after hand foot and mouth. But I can’t be sure which is probably gross!

@youboots: None of the above. I did some research and talked to their dentist and was told that it isn’t necessary.

I totally toss after a sickness. My kid just had a stomach bug and I tossed. Ew.

We use electric toothbrushes for everyone and the bristles change color as it gets more and more used, so it is clear when to replace. I'd rather not throw out something that's not worn out. So, if the toothbrush head still has life in it, I keep it and throw it in the dishwasher, either in the silverware section or the "small parts" container we have when we're doing bottles.

If it’s just a cold I don’t do anything but with something like strep I always toss and replace (I do the same with my own toothbrush after sickness).

@erinbaderin: That is fascinating!
I also find it interesting how there is a common thread about strep = garbage.
LOs just had the stomach bug this week and I am so nervous they'll get it again from their toothbrush I think I'm going to just pick up a new set at the grocery store today.
But great to know that this isn't something people are overly concerned about!

@meadow: with strep I think you can continue infecting yourself if you don't change your toothbrush. With a cold you build antibodies so you really can't keep getting it.
I've had a stomach bug and did not change my toothbrush. Didn't get sick again after using it.

Also never replaced a toothbrush after LO was sick. She's never had strep though

I replace after sickness, but then again, I always just use the cheapie toothbrushes for my son that come like 5 to a pack for $2.

You should add another response option of "nothing". You don't need to wash or toss a toothbrush when sick unless it is something like strep.

None of the above either.... I don't think DD1 has had strep, but coxsackie for sure in her throat. I've had strep and never did anything to my toothbrush either....

Neither of the kids have had strep, but I'd toss it after that. I toss after a stomach bug because norovirus is like a damn cockroach.
