@wrkbrk: I’m not sure what tests they would’ve performed. What type of doctor was it? I have a deaf child, so all of our hearing tests have been performed by an audiologist rather than hearing screening types of tests at a pedi or ENT.

At 2, the audiologist would use conditioned play to test hearing. My child would go into a soundproof booth and do something like raise his hand or drop a toy into a bucket when he heard the sound. If it was a test like this... well, 2 year olds are challenging! We weren’t very successful with booth testing until 3.5 or so.

If it was a tympanogram, the doctor would’ve stuck a probe in your child’s ear to determine the amount of fluid present, if any. A failure of this would possibly be reason to consider another set of tubes (between my two children, they’ve had four sets of tubes!) But failing this test typically wouldn’t indicate a permanent hearing loss. I think there’s a small risk with tubes that the ear drum won’t completely heal once the tube falls out, but I’m not familiar with the implications of that.

ETA she was almost 3 when they tried the headphones, prior to that the tests were not useful/she didn’t care about what was going on

@wrkbrk: sounds super normal. As long as his speech and hearing you feel are fine I would just retest when he’s older

@wrkbrk: my son will be four in April and has had hearing testing two to three times a year and only at our last appointment in December did I feel like he was able to cooperate long enough for them to get a decent amount of information! It’s hard!

@wrkbrk: no 2 year old can sit for long at a test like that I don’t think! as long as you feel like your son hears you well and is making progress with speech I wouldn’t stress and just go back for a follow up whenever they recommend.
