DD is 26 months and has been practicing using the potty for a few months. She's still in diapers because I'm not ready to make the switch to underwear just yet, but soon! So sometimes she goes in the potty and sometimes in her diaper. Every night before bed time she uses the potty. The other night she woke up crying for me and said he had to pee pee in the potty. She usually just pees in her diaper during night time so this is the first time she actually woke me up in the middle of the night for potty. I took her and she sat on the potty for 20 minutes and did not pee. She just wanted to sit there and REFUSED to get off. This is 3am so I was in no mood to just sit there with her but I tried to be patient. At 5am she woke up AGAIN and said she needed to pee in the potty but this time I didn't take her and she went back to sleep. I'm torn in this situation because of course I want to take her to the potty when she tells me needs to go but I don't want to make this a habit of taking her the potty in the MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT for her to just sit there and nothing! What would you do? Does this happen with your toddler?

I only started potty training when he woke up dry a few days a week (just after 3yo). He now goes to the potty by himself first thing in the morning which is glorious!

My lo who just turned 30 months wakes in the middle of the night to potty around 1 time a week now. When we first trained it was every night so this is definitely better.
I don't turn on any lights and don't talk to her. I may whisper something but that's it. I take her in help her with her pants set her on the potty and when I hear she's done take her off and back to bed. If she was refusing to go I might give her a warning "okay, one more minute then it's back to bed" in a whisper. I think it does get better over time.

We went whole hog when we potty trained (day and night) so it isn't quite the same situation but what we did was during the middle of the night wake ups to potty (which for the most part did stop as he got used to controlling his bladder more and more) we would read books in the middle of the night. For him the right book was "Giraffes can't dance" and the cadence of the book was a good one to relax him and he'd then pee easier/faster. I kept a small potty in his room in the early days so I didn't have to turn on the light all the way (dimmer in his room, not so much in the bathroom) but enough to see without it being jarring and making his body start to wake up too much. Does she have a book or song or something that helps during the day that might transition to night?

@yellowbird: @pelikila: not turning on the light or making sure it's dim is a good idea. I wasn't prepared to take her to the potty in the middle of the night since it was the first time she ever asked. She usually just goes in her diaper at night. I turned on the lights and not only did she not pee but it took forever to get her back to sleep! I wasn't sure if it's common for toddlers to tell you they have to use use the potty in the middle if the night just to get out if bed but NOT really have to go. I sure hope not!
