I am always amazed at how little data we use - we are on a family plan with 3 smart phones (me, DH, and 21 yr old DSS) and we don't even use 2GB

That said we use our wireless connection at home so we aren't using data there

How much data do you typically use in a month? Is that what you are scared of?

@jetsa: interesting I do have a 4 but DSS has a 5 and DH has android

@Mamaof2: it was crazy, I was quite ticked but it's fine if I use wifi at home and work.

I switched from my unlimited data to a shared plan with DH. I was really nervous at first.

We have the 2 gig plan, but, between the two of us, we've only ever once used more than 1 gig. We just make sure to connect to the wireless at home and at work.

@bunnylove08: My DH wanted to upgrade and I knew we would lose our unlimited plans and I was queasy about it - I compared the prices online and it seemed like it was the same price for less "stuff" but then I went into a Verizon store and they showed me what my bill would be and it was actually LESS - then I felt so much better about switching!

So I would suggest to in a store and ask them what your bill will be and what changes will be made once you switch - that way you feel better about doing it!

@bunnylove08: I forgot to add that I think about $15 of that monthly bill is insurance, which DH and I both have for our phones. SIL opted out of it.

@bunnylove08: DH and I were on separate, grandfathered Verizon plans and were scared to change anything. We went into a store to look at options for our oldest son and ended up with a family plan - including our son - for LESS than what we paid before. We now pay $150/month (+ tax and a work discount), and we get 10 GB, unlimited calls and texts, and insurance for DS's phone only.

Something I learned was that if your phone is on month-to-month status, the added line fee, on a family plan, is cheaper. DS's phone was new, so we pay $30 for his, but DH and I are only $15/each. {Obviously when we get new phones, that amount will double, but for now we're saving $30/month.}

I just checked my bill today and somehow used 5GB last month? No idea how since I'm almost always on WiFi (except commuting and in car) and don't stream music that often. Anyways, if you want to get around keeping the unlimited date, buy a new phone under your MIL and then transfer it to you. Verizon should be able to help you since that's what we do. My mom, sister and I all got new phones within 6 months under my husband's non-unlimited number.

I know this wasn't the question and probably varies a lot on where you live and what reception is like, but I have zero issues with tmobile.... unlimited everything still in effect.

@bunnylovesbear: You're not alone. I have 4GB for just me and I always come really close to the limit.

i have an unlimited data plan with verizon that i had with a blackberry that i purchased several years ago, but i wanted a samsung galaxy, but wanted to keep unlimited, so I bought the phone at full price so i could keep the unlimited plan. with my galaxy 4, i use about 2gb of data per month, i do lots of gps and music streaming where im not on a wifi network. i know my uncle was able to keep his unlimited, and getting the galaxy for free by using the upgrade, and using it on his wife's account/#, and then transferring to him. i'm not exactly sure how it works but it does work for multiple lined accounts; they did it at a costco verizon kiosk.

We switched from unlimited to 1gb each on individual plans. I think it's about $80 each a month. We use WiFi at home and I use it at work. Many stores have it now, too (target). We don't use it for GPS or often for music streaming. But, even when I was traveling and using it often I still didn't go over a GB. There is also a widgit you can load (at least on my s3) to show you how much you have used. And they text me when you get close.

@mrs. wagon: I really don't want to give up my unlimited data either, but DH for sure needs a new phone. Thanks for the website tip, I'll check it out. Is that the only place you usually buy from?
