DD's feet are about 3/8 inch too short for a Size 2 shoe, but she'll be required to wear real shoes to daycare when she turns one year in two months. Her little feet are still roomy in Size 1.5 crib shoes. Has anyone ever seen non-crib shoes in 1.5? I doubt she'll grow that much in two months to fit into her size 2 Carters. Or do I just put her in big shoes?

@Smurfette: All the SKR in her size had a suede bottom with rubber (for lack of a better word) accents. Do you think they are rugged enough to count as "real" shoes?

@Ms. RV: My daughter had teeny feet and they counted SKR smallers as real shoes. She was barely in a size 3 at that age. They were a little big, but she managed.

@Ms. RV: my LO wore them to day care when she first started walking. That small you aren't going to find hard soled and I definitely wouldn't buy shoes too big. Is she even walking?

@avivoca: Oh that is a relief. According to the sizing she'd be a 0-6 months in SKR. When I put her in her size 2's she walks like a duck and I think the big size might discourage her from walking.

@Smurfette: She is very close to walking, I think. She has been letting go of what she's holding on to, moving one foot, then panicking and going back to holding on. Even if she isn't walking by then I want to protect her feet from the older toddlers as much as I can. I wish I could find tiny Keens!

We had a very early walker with very tiny feet. There weren't any options for walker shoes before size four. We had her in soft soles inside and too big walker shoes when outside. It sucked.

Definitely soft soles! You don't want an early walker in a hard sole, and daycare should know that. A suede bottom should be plenty rugged for their playground. We love pediped originals, but I see they don't come small enough

@snowjewelz: Not sure of they allow them but DD takes mocs off. She needs a closure like velcro or she'll take off shoes and put them in her mouth
@SweetCaroline: @MrsSRS: I asked this morning and they said they would have to see about soft soles, they would consider them on a case by case basis.

@Ms. RV: Check out Jack & Lily. It's Canadian company and their sole is between hard and soft. You can often find them on Gilt/Zuliliy, etc too. I got a pair of boots last year for DD and was very happy with it!

SKR Smallers were great, and daycare was fine with them. (I would call them soft-er soled shoes, definitely not *soft* soled shoes.) The suede bottoms are sturdier/more substantial than what they sound like they would be (definitely not like the bottom of a moc), and the two rubber discs make up a good percentage of the actual bottom:

I'd find shoes you like and get a doctor's note if daycare doesn't like the sole.ETA: I put DD in Stride Rite shoes once she was walking, and they definitely have a sole. However, she had size 5(!) feet. Any quality shoe will do, but gosh what cute petite feet!

@Ms. RV: it was tough. She was exclusively walking by nine months and wearing size 0-6 months. This was in the fall in Canada, wearing mocs just didn't cut it at the playground with wet cold leaves. Didn't feel right making her sit out because we couldn't find appropriate footwear, we ruined probably five pairs of soft soles.

Stride Rite makes some sneakers in tiny sizes. We had a similar problem with my son when he learned to walk. I had him in a size 4 that was big, but the website shows some sneakers in crib sizes.

Are the Pediped shoes in 0-6 months too big? Those were our faves!

Target now sells Stride Rite starting at size 2. They also have some of the softer soled shoes like the picture above starting at 0-6 moths, I believe.
My non-walking 9 month old is already in size 3, so that's not an issue I've had to deal with personally.

Pedipeds are the best for this. They have a very flexible sole, but the sole is totally rubber and waterproof, so going outside is fine. This aprticular style isn't that cute, but their girl styles are adorable and this shows the sole. There is a Pedipeds group on FB for resale.

After doing a little shoe shopping for LO I found that she is still is in 0-3 or 0-6 months sizes, which still have room in the toes. I talked to the daycare director today and explained the situation and she says that anything that I feel protects her feet is fine. What a relief! I'll probably send her too big shoes for outdoor play so her feet don't get wet.

Just as a follow-up for anyone who finds this thread in the future...
I discovered Payless sells hard sole shoes starting at infant size 1. I would have not thought to look there for such little shoes.
