This is kind of a spinoff from other thread about when to start maternity leave. I personally fear going into labor at work only because I'm scared to have my water break all the place. For those of you that went into labor naturally, did your water break first before you felt contractions or after?

Mine did not break until the doctor did it at the hospital.

for both my babies, my water never broke on its own. the OB had break both right before I started pushing.

Mine broke 11 days early with no contractions. Statistically most women do not have spontaneous water breakage.

I had contractions that were different than my BH contractions for about 24 hours before my water broke, some were close together and some weren't but as the day went on there was less of a gap between the farther apart contractions. I was in slight denial about labor until it broke thinking the contractions would stop soon.

That was my biggest fear too, I wanted to start carrying an extra pair of clothes to work, just in case

I went into labor naturally and my water didn't break until after the contractions started. Mine actually sprung a leak and I thought it broke but it didn't actually break until way later in labor... scared me half to death because I felt it even though I was in the water lol....Weirdest thing ever!

I went into labor naturally and my contractions came first. I was already past 6cm before it broke on its own at the hospital.

I blame the movies, for always showing pregnant women with their water breaking unexpectedly while they are in public places!

My water broke 11 days before EDD, around 10:30 PM right after I'd laid down to go to sleep for the night (actually, most people I know whose labor starting with their water breaking had it happen at night). I'd had no contractions or other indications I'd go into labor early.

My on broke my water after I was already admitted in the hospital and had all sorts of contractions.
I would have preferred my water to break because then I would have known it was time. Instead I had lots of contractions close together, but not strong enough to make me dilate. So of course I went to the hospital only to be sent home and be totally confused about when to go back.

@artbee: That's kinda how I feel - I'm hoping my waterbreaks so I know it's time and I won't be sent home. I just want it to happen while I"m at home on tile flooring
If only we could plan these things!

most women don't have their water break and the doctor breaks it for them. childbirth is nothing like it is in the movies.
with charlie my water started trickling at the same time my contractions started. it broke completely on its own a couple hours later.
with olive the doctor broke my water when i was fully dilated.

I started labor at 4am, got to the hospital at 8am, was admitted at 9am, and the L&D nurse broke my water artificially around 11am.

My water didn't break. My OB broke my water for me when I was fully dilated (after 8 hours of labor).

Mine broke on its own in a big gush like the movies! I'd been having contractions for 4-5 hours.

3rd vote for early water breaking, no contractions. Actually, also about 11 days early, too! But it was at night, in my house. Just have a spare set of clothes at work and some spare pads. By the time your water might break, it'll be pretty clear what's happening and everyone will be understanding, I am sure!

Mine did not break and I was actually provoked. Did you know that something like 70% of women's water don't break. That's what I heard.

My water broke 1st at 1:45, then about 45 mins later, contractions started. it was a pop and then gush and constant flow. I was worried about the carpet in the bedroom.LOL

My water broke about 3 contractions in. Honestly...it was more like a very LONG leaking. I know everyone is different but I think you will be ok!

my water broke on its own and it was a gush. and continued to gush for a few hours. No contractions until the hospital starting me on pitocin about 12 hours later.

My water broke on its own, then the contractions started. But it only partly broke, my Dr had to finish breaking it at the hospital.

My water never broke on its own, the Dr broke it after I had my epidural to speed up my labor. I had been having contractions for at least 6 hours before they had to break it. Just wear a really good overnight pad every day, and make sure to put mattress protectors on your bed-- I was more concerned about ruining my mattress!

Another vote for water breaking, but no contractions. Also about a week and a half early - weird! It was a small gush, then a steady large one for quite a while.

I had that fear too! Pretty common
My water broke when the doctor broke it! And that was when I was dilated to a 9 & ready to push
