I want one that doesn't attach to the sink. I was going to go with a water pump and barrel but DH is dragging his feet. So I guess the only other option is the pitchers? Everyone use Brita around here.

Is this for drinking water only? We get a big water jug filled at the grocery store and fill up a pitcher as needed in the fridge. The jug sits in our pantry. I like that we don't have to buy replacement filters or anything.

@Shizaz: that's smart. We usually just buy gallon jugs but end up needing to buy like 10-15 a week. That's a lot of jugs and a lot of unnecessary trash!! I may try your way!

@Shizaz: Yes that's what I meant by a barrel. That is what I want to do. I am also looking at the dolphin pump. Do you have a manual pump to get it out? I've only used big water dispensers in the past.

@808love: no, ours is just capped and the top and we just pour it manually from the big jug into the pitcher. DH has to do it when it's full because I'm not strong enough! Ours isn't the biggest jug you can get though, it's a bit over 11 liters.
@Mrs. Sunshine: yeah it works out well, and reuse the jug so we don't have to worry about the extra garbage!

My siblings have Berkeys and I'd totally get one if I could justify the cost with DH (they're on wells, so it makes more sense for them)

@808love: I don't know! I bought a travel one - 1.5 gallons, and it works perfect for us. So from my point of view no need to get a huge one!

@808love: berkeys can supposedly make just about any water safe to drink because of their filters. My family are sort of preppers and that's why they got Big Berkeys (plus they have huge families)

@808love: we have a Berkey too! My parents gifted it to us. Only, they bought us the plastic one and we've had some issues with leaking and now a crack in the barrel. My parents and my sister have the Stainless steel one that @oskarsmommy: has. and it's held up way better. And I think they basically offer lifetime guarantee? When we did need new parts, my dad called them and they sent it out. We just haven't asked about the crack in the barrel so who knows/ maybe they'd replace it!
And yes my sister has the travel size and it's plenty big enough!We might even just decide to upgrade to the stainless steel one.

@Mrs. Pen: I just can't figure the size. My friend has a small family and they have 4.5 that they have to fill every 3 days and they are going to upgrade. The calculator says to get the travel size. I'm torn because I don't want to get one and then have to upgrade. So I'm torn between the big, the royal and the imperial. I have a feeling I will want to use it for cooking. I am also not sure if I want to give up counterspace. If I do, it will need to be smaller. If I get a bigger one I might have to designate another location. Do you have the stand too? We are going to get the see through spigot.

@808love: Size wise, my brother has a family of 11 and they have the Big Berkey. But it's right next to the sink so it's easy to pull out the sprayer from the faucet to refill. And because of where it's placed (the faucet is over the side of the sink, so you can set a glass in the sink to fill it) they didn't get a stand
