Amazon Dash

Ha! I can just see my toddler pressing this button over and over and ending up with 65 packages from Amazon on my doorstep.

It's bad enough that I have their logos inside my cabinets in the form of product packaging. I won't also be adding not-so-carefully disguised mini ads / lab-rat levers to my home!

@regberadaisy: I can hear me telling my grandkids - when I was your age I had to actually walk to the computer and place an order - geesh!

I can see this backfiring in a house with littlest who love to push buttons (like my house).
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
@Mamaof2: I read further and it does say they only respond to the first press until your order is delivered, so that's pretty cool. I probably wouldn't get one, though. It's easy enough to just order from my phone.

I don't really get the concept. So would you have to have different buttons for each single product you wanted to order? Is it REALLY that difficult to go to a phone or tablet and order from your history?

Having those buttons around my house would drive me crazy. I'd rather just order from my phone.

How hard is it to just get online and make an order? People are just getting plain lazy.

@kick641: oh I don't know! If it is they went thru a lot of trouble explaining the whole thing!

Totally doesn't surprise me that Amazon came up with this. I don't think it's a terrible idea, but it could get out of hand!

@Mamaof2: Ha ha, it looks real to me, too, I just think the timing is suspect!
pomegranate / 3643 posts
@honeybear: that was my first thought! We use a lot of store brands though.
@MaryM: @Smurfette: I'm sure it's geared toward people like me who think "oh this is my last trash bag, I should buy more," and then forget about it the second they walk away from the trash can.

@lawbee11: The description says it will only respond to your first press until the product is delivered, so you wouldn't end up with 65 orders of Tide.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
I don't really get it. Aren't a lot of these items subscribe & save items? Why would you need a button to press to get them?
GOLD / papaya / 10206 posts
Guys, this is amazing and I think it's genius!!! lol! I want all the auto-order buttons
pomelo / 5678 posts
@Smurfette: omg for real.
can u not just order from the phone in your pocket?
I personally like getting fresh air and seeing people by going for a walk to the store.
what next put amazon in your brain so ice cream can be dispensed into your mouth?

@Greentea: "what next put amazon in your brain so ice cream can be dispensed into your mouth?"
That sounds awesome?

Probably not an April Fools' joke:
http://www.cnet.com/news/amazon-to-launch-easy-ordering-dash-buttons/
@jedeve: Yes to store brands!
This sort of thing doesn't strike me as innovative, it strikes me as infantilizing.

"@lawbee11: The description says it will only respond to your first press until the product is delivered, so you wouldn't end up with 65 orders of Tide. [:D]"
but if you have prime (which I imagine anyone who "needs" this button must) then the delivery will arrive next day. So all you need is a toddler to push the button daily and you'll soon be overwhelmed.

This is definitely an April Fool's Day joke. Google and others have gone to more elaborate lengths in the past for their April Fools jokes.
ETA: well shoot... maybe not? Apparently they 'announced' it a year ago. Though I'm still skeptical... this article is from April 4th last year, so maybe this is the beginning of their long con April Fools 2015 joke. http://gizmodo.com/amazon-dash-is-a-magic-wand-that-makes-sure-you-never-r-1558691755

Google maps is offering pac man on any map. that's more genius. and useful IMO
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@MaryM: haha, true! Although I would hope once you received your second unwanted shipment of whatever, you'd move the button somewhere your toddler couldn't reach it!
grapefruit / 4663 posts
@Adira: exactly. We always have plenty of these items because of subscribe and save!

I regularly notice we are out of something (toothpaste, toilet paper, etc) and forget by the time I get back to my phone and have a chance to order it or even add it to a grocery list. So this would actually come in handy for me!

I feel like this has to be April Fools... I did click to request one, hahahah!

Now that I've looked at what products it's good for, I kind of love that easy mac is one of them.
Do people really eat so much easy mac that they need to have a button in their cupboard to instantly order more?
coconut / 8861 posts
@kick641: I thought this same thing too. Part of me wants to sign up just to see if it is.
grapefruit / 4584 posts
Assuming it is real (which I have doubts about), it's a little too 1984 for me. Besides, wouldn't they lose lots of money on shipping, since obviously it's cheaper for them if you order multiple items to ship in one package, rather than one by one? (This is thinking from the perspective that the customer has prime, so shipping is free)...
