My mom started teaching when I was in junior high school or so (can't remember the exact date, but I was probably 12 or so). So we were latch key kids starting from then, which was pretty great for my independence. I learned a lot more about how to cook and clean, just because we had to do a lot more of that around the house!

Yup. My parents were divorced so starting in 5th grade I came home, made myself dinner and did my homework. Then when they got back together, my dad worked out of town all week and my mom still worked so nothing changed.

While I was a latchkey, I wasn't expected to do anything but watch tv. I ended up reading a lot. My mom let us get away with a lot!

I was a latchkey kid starting when I was 11. I rode the bus home from school, and let myself in. I would usually make myself a snack, work on homework, and watch TV until my parents got home from work.

Yep! From the time I was 11 as well. I would get home, make myself something to eat, and either play with my friends in the hood (latchkey kids the lot of us) or watch Saved By the Bell X4. As school got more intense I used that time to do homework, but I was also given more responisibility in terms of getting dinner ready. My mom was usually home by about 6 and my dad by 7.

Only for a few years. After I started junior high, I started to have a longer commute than my mother.

Yes, from 9 until I graduated high school. There were a few months when my mom stayed home, but it wasn't long.

I don't think I ever was. Maybe in high school I got home before my mom sometimes? She worked at an elementary school so our hours were pretty similar.

Definitely. Way too young, unfortunately.

Yes, primarily because my younger brother's nanny was responsible for him and not me. Who knows where they went to everyday, but no one was home when I got home. I was latchkey starting in 4th grade.

yes starting in 6th grade for sure, and occasionally in 5th or earlier too.
