The kids have really started to help out with putting away their toys, and recently with folding the laundry. They also help with putting away shoes and jackets when we get home.
What are good chores for a young child to start helping out with?

Picking up toys and other random things is a great place to start. We also "vacuumed" when we were pretty young, but I'm sure it wasn't very thorough, lol. It was fun as a child, though!

Moving clothes from the washer to the dryer or from the dryer to the laundry basket? LO is only 14 months and she already enjoys helping out with this!
Putting new toilet paper rolls on when you run out?

R already likes to help unload the dishwasher. Helps set the table for dinner.

Feeding a pet is always a good chore! Teaches an important lesson that pets are not just fun.

When we get home from the supermarket, my son's (3.5 yo) jobs are to take the eggs out of their carton and place them in a basket. This is great because it requires a lot of focus and it's good for his motor skills! He also puts away the cartons of (shelf-stable) milk and we have him drag big bottles of water over into the corner. Our 2 yo usually will take packets of wipes, pull-ups etc and put them in the closet. She doesn't always put them in the right place but she likes to feel useful!

My 18 month olds first chore is feeding the cat!
He has also used the swiffer duster a few times. We will work on picking up toys soon.

Setting and cleaning the table - at least for their dishes. They also like loading and unloading the dishwasher.

Good ideas here! We don't have him do chores everyday but he does like to help.
Laundry: putting clothes in, the quarters, the soap and transferring from washer to dryer
I haven't done this with him, but my mom used to have us (as toddlers) fold washcloths. It helps with fine motor skills too
Kitchen: he loves to sweep. He's terrible at it, but he won't get better without practice. We have a small broom and dustpan he uses. We've started having him clean up the messes he makes instead of us instinctively doing it. He cleans up any spills, etc. With help so it all gets cleaned up but he likes to do it. He loves to put away dishes from the dishwasher too. And any cooking/baking, he loves to help with.
And of course cleaning up toys, putting them away, washing surfaces, washing mirrors/windows, and vacuuming.
This makes it sound like our house is always clean. Ha. not for a second. He's still so messy lol.

My 22 month old moves laundry from the dryer to our bedroom, and helps put laundry in the washer. She also cleans up her toys (somewhat) in between activities. She's pretty tidy

Just putting things away at this point...
My 22 month old will put things up and we make a big deal about it and she loves the celebration, so I guess that's translated into her getting really excited about putting things away? I'll find a hair bow and tell her to go put it in the drawer and she'll run 90 miles an hour to put it away in "The Bow Drawer" in her bathroom... Lol...Then show back up applauding herself, "Yay!!! Yay!" And clapping, haha

Chloe feeds the cats, puts her toys away, and will help us clean up. If I am mopping the kitchen, she wants to help... So I let her!
She helps me fold towels and wash cloths, will put her bath towels away & her own clothes in her drawers.

My 3 year old enjoys and is actually helpful with setting the table (placemats, napkins, silverware), putting away silverware and sweeping. Target has an awesome mini dustpan set.

So far we've had good (but not consistent) success with:
Putting toys away
Putting dishes into the sink after meals
Putting dirty clothes into the hamper
A little sweeping (but really just for fun)
Feeding the dogs
Yard work!! we've had the best success with this. Pulling weeds, raking, putting yard waste into bags, shoveling snow.

@mrbee: First chores.
Sorting laundry into different loads - whites, darks, towels
Setting the table - usually count along as we do this, usually give them one item at a time
Clear the table - take things over to the sink
Making their bed - it usually needs to be fixed by an adult but that's ok
Helping to put groceries away
Washing vegetables or fruit for meals
Pouring drinks for meal time (usually around 4 or so)
Drying cutlery
Wiping down the counter or table after meals

My 22 month old throws the napkins away after dinner, helps us put food in the fridge, and puts the spoons/forks in the sink. She also helps put her toys away and throws stuff in the garbage can for us, and puts clothes in the dirty clothes.

My kids love to clean the windows - I have one of those towels that cleans w/o cleaner so its safe and easy for them to use.
DD loves to match socks after I wash them
Feed the dog
Not chores per say but daily they have to make sure all dirty clothes are in the hamper, after they eat the dishes go in the sink, and rooms are cleaned up before bed (if needed)
