What birth control did you use while breastfeeding?

@periwinklebee: we have used condoms since a few months before we conceived my oldest child. Obviously different for everyone, but I've tried to get pregnant four times, and have gotten pregnant four times. I have never gotten pregnant while using condoms.

@Silva: Hopefully will work for us to - I'd be somewhat surprised if it didn't given that it took us awhile to conceive and we're pretty careful, though of course you never know...

@periwinklebee: I didnt mean to sound braggy (though I realize I totally did, sorry) just that I think when used correctly they can be very effective. Hope you have a similar experience!

@Silva: I don't think it sounded that way at all

We’ve used mini pill + condoms both times. My doctor said that was fine while I’m breastfeeding so much, but once my cycle comes back and baby gets a bit older, she thinks it’s improtant to switch to something more reliable. I want my husband to get a vasectomy soon.

Minipill after LO1. I hated it though, and I think it made me kind of depressed. After LO2, I got a copper IUD. It makes my period super long and heavy so it's a HUGE negative, but when I'm not on my period, it's great. I have to get it removed in 6 months since it will expire, and my DH is taking permanent measures in the meantime. I cannot wait!

@Silva: agree. I know condoms have a terrible rate of reliability on paper, but I've always wondered if it's because people say that's their birth control method on surveys and then just DON'T use them or "forget" to use them, so condoms take the fall for stupidity? or maybe people using the wrong size etc? I got off the pill in 2012 because it was ruining my sex drive and we've been on condoms ever since, and same as you, never had a problem. they're not amazing, but at least cleanup is a breeze

@LCTBQE: my friend had a condom come off during sex without noticing and decided to take plan B to be safe- but she fully admits that they were drunk and he probably didn’t get it on right (and how do you not notice when it comes off?!).
there is a lot more room for user error, in a way where people maybe don’t know they arent doing it correctly!
Full disclosure- I’ve never put a condom on someone, so I have no idea if it’s easy or hard. But it doesn’t look like rocket science.

@Silva: haha, maybe I've avoided accidental pregnancy all these years by promptly falling asleep every time I've had more than 1 glass of wine
