Do you ever get a good, full answer when asking your LO what they did at school that day? Or do you get the classic "I don't know/nothing"?
LO sometimes says a few things she did that day, but other times it's "we read a book, that's it" ha!

She answers "I don't know" to just about every question we ask, but I'll just reply that I can wait for her to think about it and she usually comes up with some sort of answer and then might jump excitedly into a story from her day

I ask specific questions:
Who did you sit next to at snack?
Who did you play with on the playground?
Did any thing make you happy? Sad?
What did you notice?

I try to ask specific questions since I know the basics of their schedule. Like what book did you read at circle time, what letter or number are you working on, who did you play with outside, what did you play with in the classroom, etc. I find that I get much better details about his day this way!

I ask specific questions like some of the PPs!

9 times out of 10 I get "Played with my friends" with an annoyed look like "mom, get it together, I always play with my friends at school, why do you keep asking!?"

"I played" It's so annoying!! I'll ask who she played with on the playground, what book they read and what letters they are learning. Usually she tells me she forgets!

She usually says "I'll tell you later". Doesn't matter if I ask specific questions sometimes.

In preschool, it literally was playing the whole time the kids were there, so I really didn't ask. He would answer that they played, or were outside.
Now in kindergarten, I legit want to know so I ask specific questions about their scheduled specials and based on the work that came home. They worked on the letter c so I asked questions about the project, etc.

We get "I don't know" every day. It's very frustrating because DS just started pre K at a new place, we've heard (mostly unspecified) bad things about them from parents in his old day care, and this is really not helping me figure out if we made the right call sending him there anyway, or it was a horrible mistake.

"I had a nemo yogurt".
Well yes, I packed that for you - what else did you do?

It's rare that I get any actual information. If I ask specifically who he played with, he'll answer with something plausible. If I ask what his favorite part of the day was, he'll say "outside." Aka recess. Lol.

I try to ask specific questions, like what was her favorite thing or what friends did she eat lunch with.
If I just ask her how her day was, she will either say, "Great!" or "I cried for you," depending on how the day was.

My daughter (who is almost 7) gives the looooooongest answers with so much detail. I try to pay attention but after a few minutes I really just want her to wrap it up. #badmom

4 yr old (preK) DD1 is 50/50 on whether or not she'll answer specific questions ("What was for lunch?" "Did you have gym or dance today?") with real answers. She likes to tell me important facts, like "FriendA wore a green dress today!"

Ask specific questions, "what was your favorite thing you played outside?" "What was your favorite center you went to?" "Who played with you at that center?" "Tell me about that book your teacher read." "What was your favorite food you ate at lunch?" "How did it make you feel when...?" Our teacher last yr had a website and posted photos while the kids were napping. I'd check to see what they did that day and ask specific questions about it.

I try to ask specifics but don't always get answers. She'll usually tell me about the snack though

Usually he says, "Nothing." But since I glance at his daily report before I ask, I can ask more specific questions. Once I ask about something specific, he goes off on a whole story!

Instead of "what did you do today" I usually ask multiple questions, eg:
- Who did you play with today?
- Who is your best friend today?
- What does xyz like playing with usually? Does he like playing with blocks too?
- What did xyz bring for lunch today? / What did you eat for lunch? Did xyz finish his lunch? / Did you finish your lunch?
- Did you have fun today?
Usually he'd elaborate and give me better answers

Her first day of preschool (last week) her response was "I ate graham crackers! And...., I took that from her." She has trouble sharing and tells on herself to me. Lol.

DS just walks in the door saying I did nothing today without me even asking. I try to ask specific questions but every answer is usually nothing.

I start off with happy subjects like food and people. Did you sing songs? Also I ask about things she learned on tv and relate it. Like did you learn about planets if she watched a space show recently. What did you learn about ?

"I didn't do anything" "played!" "I forgot" are the 3 basic tenets of what she did at school.
