Ability to pull down pants. Telling you when they are going or just went.

@BandDmommy: telling you verbally before going? Or telling you during/after? LO tells us when she is peeing but she doesn't tell us beforehand. And with poop she goes to a certain spot and tells us to change her when she's done, but she doesnt tell us before she poops.

I think LO may be ready to potty train early (not yet but in the near future). She is 17 months.
The signs I've noticed: She tells us right after she poops. She has a lot of interest our potty habits and understands that our pee pee & poo poo go in the potty (and the dog's go outside, haha). She likes to change her dolls' diapers and talk about their poo poo & pee pee. She can hold her pee - she has a few very wet diapers per day versus slightly wet all day.
Signs we have not seen yet: Telling us BEFORE she goes. She is not very aware of when she pees, it seems, and doesn't mind a wet diaper like she does a dirty one. She does not ever wake up from naps dry. Big one: I don't think she can pull her own pants up and down, but she also usually wears leggings which are harder.

None. I just decided to out her on a potty one day to get her use to it and she knew to pee right away. From then on I just started putting her on the potty every night before bath. Eventually she started telling me before she has to go or during. She's still in diapers/pull ups but she uses the potty a couple times a day. I plan to switch her to underwear soon.

@daniellemybelle: she started using the potty at 21 months. She's 27 months now. I've been really relaxed about it. Sometimes she goes in diaper/pull up and sometimes in potty. I mainly just wanted her to practice and get comfortable with it. But now with baby 2 coming in a few months I'm gonna get more serious about it!

@daniellemybelle: thanks, that's really helpful! We are in a similar spot, I'm nowhere near ready to start training yet, but lo is showing a lot of the signs. So i guess I'm sorta looking for a list of signs she's not showing that i can use as signs she's really ready when the time comes haha. She definitely doesn't wake up dry for naps either, and she also wears leggings, and never tries to pull them down. But she understands the bathroom process and guides us through it when we do it, and she says "psssssss" while she pees in her diaper and whenever we use the toilet. Im just torn between not wanting to start before 2 (i dont want to deal with relapses) but also wanting to capitalize on her interest, and maybe doing a little light training over the summer while shes in dresses and stuff. I thought I'd be excited to potty train, but it turns out i love the convenience of diapers!

@Pirouette: I love the convenience of diapers too! Potty training seems like a pain. But I am a little afraid of missing a good window. I read a blog post on here about potty readiness and that some kids are ready around 18 months because they are in an eager to please stage versus resistant like most 2 year olds.

@daniellemybelle: ooh that's interesting. i can definitely see that - she's in the "wanting to do everything like mommy and daddy" phase, not yet in the difficult phase, so that does make sense! I just don't want to train her on the early side, ditch diapers and then have her hit the 2's and regress! i guess we'll play it by ear this summer, depending how she takes to it.

She asked to use the bathroom and also told us after we went pee and poop in her diaper.

Like @daniellemybelle: said, the biggest sign that I've heard to wait for is that they can pull up and down their trousers/leggings. We are not at that stage yet at 18mths, so although she tells us when she has pooped I don't consider her ready. Besides, I am not ready...I'm kinda lazy and don't want to deal with the having to find a bathroom right now when we're out issues yet. I had to run half a mile home with my 4y/o niece the other day...not ready for that!

@illumina: ok that's great to know! it makes sense to wait for her to be able to do that, so maybe that will be our 'sign' when it's time to start...or maybe the urge will have passed her over by then and we'll wait longer! and i totally agree, i think i would keep her in diapers forever if it was socially appropriate
