We spend so much time every day doing dishes, since our sink and dishwasher is so small. Can't wait for the kids to start helping out! Not sure what the right age to get them started is, though.
When can kids start washing dishes?

My parents had me start washing non breakable items around age 5. I would wash Tupperware and utensils (except knives).

My daughter "helps" and she is 18 months old. She always brings her plate to the sink after we eat- this has been her chore since she could walk and carry something at the same time!
For dishes, we pull a stool up to the sink and fill it up with soapy water. She helps- mostly its pretty wet, but she does get the concept. Other people I know use plastic tubs, one with soapy water and one for rinsing, and the kids sit at the table and do the dishes that way. -
My three year old knows to clear her plate and put it in the dishwasher (she needs help opening it, though), and she loves to 'help' do the dishes.

To actually wash dishes, like without the dishwasher? I think they need to be older, honestly, because they need to be able to scrub and check that all the food is off.
To load the dishwasher, by the age of three.
