When did you first take your LO skiing for the first time (as in, how old were they)? How'd it go? How long did you go for? Any advice for someone who hasn't done it yet?

I think most ski slope lessons start at 2 or 3...I can't see doing it any younger than 2, and that's only if the LO is super coordinated and adventurous! We may try to take LO this winter (he'll be 2 in oct) but will definitely have him in ski school next year when he's 3!

I live in a ski town and always see teeny tiny kiddos at the ski school! My dad carried me in a backpack while he skiied when I was just over a year, and at 2 I started lessons, so you can start them young!

@hilsy85: Yeah, Xander turns 2 in February, so we were thinking of taking him this winter. Probably not doing ski school yet or anything, but taking him down some bunny slopes with Dada.

@MediaNaranja: My husband's dad did the same (carried him on his back while skiing)!! But that makes me nervous, so I don't think I'm letting Hubs do that, haha. Maybe cross-country skiing, but not alpine!

I have never been skiing myself! I would love to do it though, maybe when LO is 3 or 4 years old

I was on skis from age 2 and always loved it! It was a huge bonding activity for my sister, my father and I, and the ski hill was about 1hr30 from our house so it had the added benefit of giving my mom Saturday mornings off - we'd be bundled up & out of the house by 630am and not back til 1pm every Satuday of the winter!

D is planning on taking E this winter...around 2.5, give or take a month or two. No advice yet, though!

DH wants to take LO skiing in Feb. She will be 3!

Here it seems like kids ski fairly early, around 3. I don't ski and my LO hasn't yet. We took him on a snow vacation just after he turned 2, and he could barely walk in the snow, so I don't think skiing at that age would have gone over very well.

@fairy: I've only been a handful of times and I'm not very good, but I think it's fun! Hubs comes from a skiing family, so he LOVES it and I want him to do it with our kids, so I was thinking maybe this winter!
@ScarletBegonia: This is exactly what I want!! My husband is a huge skiier and I'm not very good. I want him to take our kids as a big bonding activity! I think it'll be so much fun for all of them!
@lovehoneybee: 2.5 is how old my BFF's daughter was when they took her for the first time. She LOVED it, so hopefully E will too!
@mrbee: haha, yeah, I don't blame you. I never went skiing before I met my husband. Although my elementary school did ski lessons in the winter, so I could've gone if I wanted to!
@lamariniere: Yeah, I'm not sure how it will go if we end up taking Xander this winter! My best friend took her daughter at 2.5, but she definitely had to basically push/pull her around on the skis because she couldn't navigate it herself.

@Adira: my BIL took our nephew last winter at 3 and it was a disaster. But he's one of those kids that hates being cold soooo...
I think it depends on your kid. DH might try to take L this winter.
However, I keep hearing the same advice over and over again: *DON'T BUY YOUR KID SKI OR SNOWBOARD EQUIPMENT UNTIL YOU KNOW THEY REALLY LIKE IT!* they grow so fast that it is a waste of money.

DH plans on taking the little guy this winter...he'll be two. We wish our parents would have taken us as kids. I tried to learn as an adult and failed miserably.

When my son was born, I was insisting he would be on skis by the time he turned 3, that didn't happen, lol. Even when we lived in Switzerland, legit runs were at least 2 hours away by train and super expensive. There, kids go to ski school, as part of their regular schools, for at least 10 days every winter, it's how every kid learns to ski there. The problem is with continued exposure. The slopes are kind of remote and not accessible, so it's a challenge.
Now, I have no idea when we'll get our son going, because we have a long drive, and that's not how I want to be spending my weekends, because I don't ski!

@dagret: Good point! We'll definitely just be renting skis and boots for Xander when we take him. Plus he'll be growing so fast, I'm not sure it would be worth buying him any of these supplies until he's older!!
@hotchildinthecity: haha, same! I tried to learn as an adult and I can kind of ski, sort of, but I'm TERRIBLE. And if I fall, I can't get back up!

I think we will go next winter, when LO is 3. Before that I don't think you can enroll them in the little ski schools and I'm ALL about that.

@looch: That's really unfortunate! Where we live, most of the decent slopes aren't that close either - maybe the closest is an hour away? BUT our town has a tiny tiny bunny slope right in town, which I think will be perfect for Xander to learn on, so we're going to do that! Then if he likes it, we'll be more willing to spend the time driving to a better slope.
