This is a really good question! You are totally right about having no landline and locked cell phones. Something to think about!

@autumnlove: We taught our eldest how to dial 911, but I hadn't thought about the lock on the phone!! I think you can make 911 calls without passing the lock? Will investigate and teach the kids!!

@mrbee: you can, on the page for putting in the code there is a button on the bottom that says emergency.

I taught LO at 3. I have went to the fire station on multiple field trips and the firefighters teach them 911 at this age. The teacher tried to stop him on the last one for fear of prank calls but he said the important thing is that the kids stay on the line and don't hang up until the conversation is over and they say bye. Then they can ascertain what is really going on.
Because it is hard to dial regular numbers on the iPhone, LO knows how to type my lock code, slide, pick the star for favorites and look for Her dad's and grandmas phone number. I also taught her my phone number --which she confuses with the house lock code, 911 and any passwords she needs to put on the iPad. That is her favorite number, by far.

For I devices you can change the pass code to alphanumeric instead of just numberic. We made the iPad pass code our little guys name and he gets in easily. He still doesn't know my numbers and can't get in my phone.
The best thing about iOS8 is that the call emergency button is much smaller to prevent young accidental calls.
He just learned about 911 from school at 3.5 years old.

Our eldest has known how for a few years now. He even called 911 at his moms house... to chat? lol. The police had to come over and talk to him about why it's important to only call when there is an emergency. He really wants to be a police officer so... I guess he wanted to get to know them a bit better and since he knew their phone number....
