@rahlyrah: We pick litter with the kids twice a week! They each get a plastic bag and compete to spot litter on the sidewalk... then I grab the litter with the picker, and whoever spots the trash gets it in their bag. It's a fun way to take a walk in the evenings, or to spice up the walk home from school.
We're going to start volunteering with our eldest after he starts Kindergarten this fall... there aren't a ton of opportunities for kids, but soup kitchens and nursing homes have been the most responsive to volunteering when I've called to ask!

@mrbee: I love the litter idea! A nursing home is another great idea. B is only one, so we are really limited, but I want to start teaching him the importance of compassion early.

We started bring C along for holiday meal delivery programs when he was a baby. We did a couple visits to nursing homes as well when he was 1. We plan to really start at age 3 with more regular efforts doing...something. Tbd

Because we're so involved with our church, volunteering and helping others is part of the curriculum for kids from a very young age. I'm sure she'll be exposed to the idea of volunteering as soon as she's old enough to get it.

I've been trying to decide this too. DH and I would like to be involved with a local crisis pregnancy center. I think for the first little while we need to do it without her. I don't think she would be helpful in any role. Maybe at 3-4 we could bring her along to help with things like cleaning up or organizing the donations (separating diapers into piles, toys, etc)

@rahlyrah: we haven't started yet but last Christmas we adopted a family and my ILs took LO to drop off the presents at the YWCA.
My cousin in law used to take her two year old with her on meals on wheels deliveries. The elderly love seeing kids!
