We're planning Xander's first real birthday party with his school friends. We've got a place booked and invites made. My question is - when do I actually distribute the invitations? I want to give them out early enough that people hopefully won't already be booked and be able to come, but not so early that people forget about the party altogether by the time it comes around? Thoughts?

I try to do one month ahead because I know for us that is how far out I tend to plan my calendar

I like to get invites about 4 wks ahead. So I try to give mine out that early or earlier.

I did about a month, and asked for an RSVP a week before the party. This gave me enough time to write notes and leave them in the cubbies of the people who didn’t RSVP to remind them.

I send out invitations a month before, and send a reminder email a couple days before the party. I really like getting a reminder - my calendar is a mess!

5-6 weeks for close family and friends and a month for school friends.

Are you doing paper invites? I love evite or paperless post, they send out reminders a few days before the event.

I prefer at least 2 weeks notice but that doesn't seem to be the trend. My son just went to 2 birthday parties last weekend that we got the invites about 4-5 days before. He just came home with an invitation today that is for Friday afternoon which I'm considering just saying no on principle. I'm a sahm so I can go out and buy a present but if I worked I might not be able to fit that in my schedule.

I do about 3 weeks which seems to be the norm at our schools. A month seems like too much time to either forget to rsvp or rsvp and then make other plans. What have other parents done that had seemed to work?

@MamaCate: It seems pretty random at our school - we've gotten invites only 1 week in advance and up to 6 weeks in advance!

4 weeks is preferable, but I've sent them as late as 1.5 weeks beforehand (last minute decision). LO has received an invitation as late as 3 days before the party.

I just got a bunch of birthday invites for Feb into early march. So a while out. I have also gotten them 2 weeks out. I am not sure how much of a difference it makes in number of people who attend.

3-4 weeks. But I did 6 weeks when we had my DS’s party since we held the party mid-December.

4 weeks. I actively plan my life 3 weeks ahead. If I get an invite 2 weeks in advance, either you hose my plans or I skip your party.

My vote wasn’t an option, but I’d say in between 3-4 weeks. That should be plenty of time for people to check their schedule and get back to you and usually how far out we plan things.

@lamariniere: +1 for my daughters first birthday I sent out her invites almost 6 weeks in advance, but her birthday is the first weekend of January, so with Christmas and New Years it’s a super hectic time of year.
If the party isn’t around any major holidays, which it doesn’t sound like it is I still vote 3-4 weeks. 5-6 weeks with a holiday.
