We have hand me downs we don't love so we want to get new furniture for our new house. We especially need a couch (and maybe some chairs) and a dining set.
I love West Elm but it's pricey. We looked at Ashley Furniture & found a few things but there has to be more places to look. I know IKEA is a popular choice but the styles are kind of limited.

Local, IKEA, overstock. I wouldn't necessarily recommend West Elm for couches ... We had one and it looked nice but the quality was questionable.

Our dining set came from Rooms to Go, and our sofa and chairs came from Havertys. We also have a lot of things from Ikea.

Most of our furniture is from Ikea. We accessorize with interesting bits from here and there - although come to think of it, even my curtains are from Ikea downstairs!

We still have a mixture of family "heirlooms" and hand me downs.
New stuff tend to be from local furniture stores, Target and IKEA. We're particular about IKEA though because not all their stuff is well made or worth the money. We actually just found our dining table at IKEA yesterday after looking for almost a year!

We bought our leather sectional from American Signature, dining room table and chairs, master bedroom furniture and office desk from Ashley Furniture. Our boys' bedroom furniture is a mix of Ikea, Walmart and Target. And, other Ikea pieces are mixed throughout the house.
I guess the majority of our furniture is from Ashley.

I have not priced many places so I don't know how they compare but we shop at Room and Board.
Most of their products are made in the US, and they make efforts to minimize chemicals which was very important to us. Also we saw nothing but positive reviews of their customer service both in store and for the delivery which has been our experience so far. (We've ordered a couch but it has not been delivered yet - this was our first new furniture purchase so we're super excited.)

@locavore_mama: we haven't! We bought our dining set before we started building. I've seen some plans for benches and they don't look too difficult. I think y'all will have an easy time with it.

@locavore_mama: @Leialou: We built a dining bench to go with our farmhouse table (Ana White, of course!!) and it was no big deal. We have built several pieces and love them! Up next, building an outdoor dining set.

@shellio: @Leialou: thanks! yeah, DH is really handy. He basically gutted and did all the renovations to our home So I'm not worried about the building aspect. Just looking for tips and tricks to make it go easier since we've never built one before.
And when we do our backyard next summer I want a farmhouse style picnic table with benches! Hehe

So many of you said "local stores"... I don't even know where to look! We do have one store that is kind of local (a smaller chain) called Nadeau that I love but the selection is not great for what we need.

@daniellemybelle: Yeah I have loved the quality of furniture I got from there and it really looks much more expensive than it was. (dinning set) Also, a lot of time they will have good sales and if you sign up to be an explorer (just like a rewards card ) you get an exta 10% off sale price so we got such a good deal.

@daniellemybelle: You don't need DH!! I barely knew what a drill was for before I started building! My DH doesn't even like building so I do most things myself. He doesn't mind pitching in a bit though, so I ask him to do all the cutting for me after I mark boards (the circular saw scares me) and sometimes the assembly requires two people but I mostly do it myself. Give it a try! This bed was one of our first projects and cost less than $200. The side tables are homemade too.

@shellio: I love Ana White! ETA you're doing all that with only a circular saw? You should invest in a miter saw or table saw! It's way easier and less intimidating to me than the circular saw.

@daniellemybelle: IMO CB2 is better quality than West Elm. In my experience West Elm ends up being on par with IKEA over time.

We like a midcentury/streamlined look and actually found our couches at Macy's of all places for a very good price (after lusting after a certain set at Room & Board). Go during a sale (Labor Day, Columbus Day, etc) for extra savings and if you get the Macy's card you'll get another 10% off and they'll deliver free. We also got the warranty and they've mailed us new cushion covers when we get stains on them.
Our dining set is from Scandinavian Designs, which we got during a sale so it wasn't too terrible.
Our coffee table bedroom furniture is from Bassett Furniture. The pieces are substantial and extremely reasonable when you buy on sale. They often discontinue finishes or colors when they do a blowout sale and its SO much cheaper than their regular priced items. For example, we got a walnut finish Cal King bed (footboard, headboard, frame) for $600.
