While I do enjoy saving money and helping out the environment, those aren't the reasons I decided on cloth.
My mom used to always tell me that she used cloth on me because she didn't want anything else touching my tushy. And while I know disposable diapers are a million times better now a days, her words still go through my head, and I only wanted cloth for my baby's tush too.
Why did you pick cloth diapers over disposable?

Same here. I don't wear paper underwear, so why should my LO? Of course, I don't poop my pants, but I digress

Cost was the deciding factor for me, with health benefits second, and ecological benefits being a nice perk. Though, if there weren't one size diapers or AIOs/AI2s, I wouldn't do it. Also, I prefer doing laundry to taking out the trash (I'm weird like that.)

Environment, chemicals, and money.
I did use some disposables for her first couple weeks and then at night her first couple months and I got another reason.....dogs. My one dog was obsessed with eating her diapers. I could put them anywhere, up high, with a lid, unless I took them to the outside trash every time he'd eat them, it was horrible, he didn't care about getting punished either, he felt a need to get rid of her dirty diapers. The cloth for some reason he does't try to get to.

For me, it's cost, then ecological benefits. Cost and environmental reasons are pretty high up there but the money I will be savings is slightly more important to me.

For me it is the cost (plus I'll be able to use them for multiple children and save even more). And they are just cuter which doesn't hurt!

No baby yet, but we will definitely attempt cloth diapering first. Like the OP, my brother and I were both cloth diapered and my mom has pressed us to cloth diaper as well. I did more research and am totally a huge fan (cost, environment, etc.) She'll be the main caretaker when I go back to work, so if she's willing to continue my cloth diapering post-maternity leave, I am all for it!

To be truly honest... I wanted to cloth diaper because they are cuter. They can match outfits/baby legs and be fun. Then it was the control of knowing what touched the tushy.
Now, I love that I can see the bowel movements even from daycare. Then I know if everything is working correctly for him.

For us its a combination of reasons, its better for the babies skin, its cheaper [in the long run] and it is more eco friendly.

I also think it's a convenience thing. I already have all my diapers. I never run out, I never have to run to the store to get more. They're always there. (As long as I did laundry....)

Initially I wanted to cloth diaper to keep the icky chemicals in disposables off DS's bum. I read a few blog posts/articles about the Pampers Dry Max recall and the chemical burns babies got from the diapers and was really nervous about putting DS in disposables. Cloth diapers are also so much cuter!
Those reasons are still valid for us, but after buying a pack of sposies for when DS was on antibiotics, I really see how much money we'd be spending on them each month.
I love cloth diapering.

Cost and health are my top reasons, plus when my youngest sister was a baby, I was her chief babysitter evening and weekends, and we used cloth on her, pins and rubber panties! I figure since I could handle that, with today's all in ones, it'll be even easier.

@artbee: Same here... Except that I have to tell my husband at least twice and have the bag out and ready to go. So I usually end up taking it out anyway (he doesn't notice mess nearly as much as I do.)

It is better for my baby's skin and cost are the main reasons we chose to cloth diaper. My mom used cloth for both my sister and me and I wanted to do the same for my son. The benefit to the environment is secondary for me but a great added bonus.

Cost because I'm just cheap and chemicals because once I learned about them, I said no way. BUT she has to use them at daycare which sucks, but I can't get around that.
