If my friend was fine with it, Yep! At least for my BFF. We constantly lament that we should have synchronized our pregnancies because I had a massive oversupply and donated tons of milk because my freezer overflowed and she's had huge troubles with supply and her LO is mostly on formula. I have no doubt I could have fed her baby with my oversupply! And if she'd been in a pinch and her LO needed to nurse directly I would have done it.

In an emergency, absolutely.

Absolutely. I'd never let a baby go hungry if I had the ability to feed it!

In a heartbeat. I also have a baby refusing a bottle and wouldn't think twice about nursing my niece who is 2 weeks older than my son.

This used to be a super normal thing - and still is in some lower income countries with a strong sense of community and no formula available. I think I would feel weird doing it, though, not because of a lack of a biological relationship but just because it's someone else's kid. Of course, I wouldn't hesitate if it was an emergency situation.

My friend and I have babies who are a week apart. We've both been fine with our supplies but I've been able to pump a little extra here and there and she has not. I've told her if she ever needs a bottle I'm more then happy to give her some of my milk. She hasn't taken me up but she said she may have to if we ever decide to go to happy hour or something and her DH has to give the baby a bottle!

@twodoghouse: I had that thought at work yesterday! (Peds nurse). The baby seemed to be rooting on me while I was trying to put it to sleep and was never breastfed. I was thinking how crazy that would be if one, I just randomly started doing that at work, or two, if that was part of my job!

I knew someone who had a surprise later pregnancy at the same time her daughter at 19 had a baby. They nursed each other's babies all the time.

I have donated pumped milk to a bunch of strangers, but I know I would feel weird about nursing another baby. If the situation arose though I would try to get over it and logically I have no issue doing it. In your situation, it really sounds like it would help you and your friend out a lot if you were able to get over the mental hurdle and do it! I say suggest it to her, the worst that can happen is she thinks it's weird. Could work out really well for you both.

I think it would be weird only because it is so against the social norm. Aside from that I feel like villages of moms have done this all along. I dont think it is weird at all, though practically speaking I think it would take a special set if circumstances.
