Will you get your child (5 and under) a tablet for a big holiday like Christmas or have you bought them a tablet for a big holiday?
Mine won't. *I* need a new tablet before she gets one! Haha. I would love a Surface Pro.

We would maybe get a family tablet at some point, but not this year. She uses my laptop and phone. LO2 uses the phone only.

No because I can't stand being asked for another thing and having to tell her no all day about it lol

We actually did this for her birthday, but she doesn't really like it, goes through spurts.

We got a Kindle Fire, cost all of $50. My son was turning 5. He had been playing with our first generation ipad before that, though, which wasn't worth that much any more.
Oh, and now that my son is in kindergarten, it's kind of recommended by the school in support of the applications that they provide licenses for.

NOPE. I don't see any reason why a small child needs a tablet.
That said, we DO have two tablets that we can play videos on for the kids for long rides, and having two was a lifesaver when Xander was in the hospital. But it is 100% MINE and does not belong the kids at all, even though it has a kid-friendly cover and many kid-friendly videos loaded on it.

My parents are getting LO a tablet for Christmas. The kindle one. She rarely plays with the ipad but I am ok with it cause we will have all control over it. I think it will come in handy with a new baby arriving in January. It will not be something she has access to every day.

We got our kids the 50$ kindle fires as well. They work great for long road trips!!

I would consider getting myself one and sharing it! I got myself and ipad for Mother's Day when LO was one.

No, we thought about getting him a Leap Pad but then decided that it's better to hold off on getting him hooked on something like that. He's not quite 3, though, so who knows how I'll feel next year when he's bigger.

I'm considering it. He loves to do jigsaw puzzles on my very old ipad, and the Endless alphabet series of apps. It's a lifesaver when I need him out of my hair while I'm making dinner or something. But the ipad is very old, and slow. He doesn't mind, but I'm not sure how much life it has left.

Nope.
I have an iPad with a child proof case that he is allowed to use with permission for allotted amounts of time.
I wouldn't see the point in getting him one of his own. He'd likely argue it's "his" and he could use it whenever he wants. He knows that if it's "mine", he still needs to get permission and respect my property.
And it's just too much to spend on a four year old! I'd rather get him Legos

We got one for DS (2), because DD (4) has one and its started causing fights. But, it's a LeapPad3, so it doesn't actually go online, we just load it with content and the ONLY time they are allowed to use them is on our car rides to see grandparents (2 hours and 8 hours away). I could totally see how having it be a thing we use at home / whenever would get tough to put limits on.
Now they have the same devices and we can share the content among them.

No. my DDs (4 and 2.5) currently have a hand me down iPad and iPhone (technically the iPad is mine, I guess, but I never use it), which are mostly for car use. They'll get upgrades when we next upgrade our devices.

No. We have a first generation iPad with a few kids movies and apps on it that we give her to play with when we travel. I don't think she needs anything else.
honeydew / 7235 posts
No. he had basically stolen my iPad for a while, but we just recently pulled the plug on the iPad usage for a while as it was getting out of control... I probably won't let him have his own until he's much older.
grapefruit / 4321 posts
Nope. We have an iPad mini that is predominantly used by her, but it's not hers.
pineapple / 12234 posts
We'll get a kindle fire for my youngest. The older two are the only ones who use the big iPad and the iPad mini even though they belong to us.
@hellobeeboston: we did this too - they went the whole summer without the iPad and learned to play without them again. Once we broke the crazy addiction, we let them have 30 minutes of iPad time on Saturday/Sunday.
I think tablets are fine in moderation. And honestly, sometimes its the only way I can clean my house or take a shower.

Yes, he's getting a kindle fire for Christmas. He is allowed to watch youtube videos a few times a week and I'm tired of his apps clogging up my tablet.

We got her a Kindle Fire last year (she was 2.5yo), she is really starting to make good use of it now!
nectarine / 2018 posts
@Mrs D: Did you get her the kids kindle or just a regular kindle? My mom wants to get one for DD but wasn't sure which would make more sense.
persimmon / 1445 posts
I bought a Kindle Fire for my husband last year but we put a childproof case on it. DD will occasionally use it to watch movies but I don't think she needs her own.

@catgirl: My understanding is the Kids Kindle is essential a Kindle Fire with a case and the 2 year guarantee...so I dont think there is much difference. We got the kids because we wanted the two year replacement warranty...for 2 years for any reason (dropped in toilet, thrown out car window, etc) they replace it no questions asked...
coconut / 8079 posts
@catgirl: we got the kids one last year and I think it's worth it for the case and no questions asked warranty. you also get a year of amazon free time for free so we have downloaded a bunch of different books and games for him. We won't pay for the monthly subscription when it ends, we will probably just pay for a game at a time as needed.
We got LO a kids Kindle last year for Christmas. No regrets. He goes to lots of therapy and doctors appointments where he needs to wait and having the tablet in addition to other quiet activities has been great for him.

I don't really believe in tablets for little kids. We have an old iPad he uses on car rides and that's enough right now.
pineapple / 12793 posts
My oldest two already have iPads. They get a few minutes on the weekends every once in a while or on long car trips. I keep them hidden during the week. I thought we'd have a problem taking them away but they really respond to it as an occasional treat.
grapefruit / 4291 posts
Nope, nope, nope, my kids have books, toys and a big outside yard to occupy their time so I don't see any benefit to having their own tablet.

I voted yes.
We purchased a LeapPad for DD when she was 2 or 3. Right now she uses my husbands old beat up iPad on occasion. She isn't terribly obsessed with using it honestly.
honeydew / 7235 posts
@HLK208: yeah, we cut cold turkey for about 4/5 weeks, zero iPad. We want to allow it for a bit on weekends though.... But when he gets it, he is constantly asking for it and wondering what he did wrong when he can't constantly have it. Trying to explain he is not being punished, but that it's only for weekends.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
Well, we just bought an ipad Air over the weekend, it technically belongs to the family. We all have accounts on it, and I have the parental control.
I wasn't planning on it, but our 1st generation ipad doesn't support the apps that we needed, so we just got the least expensive version.
pomelo / 5720 posts
No. He's allowed to use my ipad occasionally to use apps or watch PBS kids though. I find his behavior to be very difficult when he uses the ipad so I don't anticipate him having his own for a long time.
nectarine / 2636 posts
My in laws decided to get DD and her cousin (2 yo and almost 2 at the time) a tablet for Christmas last year. Ugh. We limit screen time and she would get frustrated really easily using it so it went into a drawer in the house after about 5 uses.
pear / 1788 posts
Kindle fire kids edition, with headphones. We travel a lot, and it will only be allowed during road trips and airplane travel.
pomelo / 5791 posts
We were going to, because I got a kids kindle on Amazon day for super cheap. We ended up just giving it to him when he went back to school.
eggplant / 11408 posts
She already has a Kindle Fire for road trips, so no. She doesn't use it at home, really, so I'm not fussed about her having it. It's been a life saver on many a long drive!
