We just got a note from dd's school that she might have been exposed to hfm. I am not sure whether to send her to school tomorrow or not. Is there any point in keeping her home if she already has been exposed?

We had it go through our daycare once last year and we did not keep her home. I figured by the time the first kid was symptomatic she'd already been exposed probably anyways.

No, bc kids are contagious before they have symptoms. And you'd have to keep her out for weeks to steer clear!

Hfm has happened a couple times in our daycare over the last couple years and lo has never caught it, and we never kept her home

We did only because we literally had just come home with the new baby, but otherwise he would have went anyway.

Nope. I feel like last year there was a notice on the door for hfm most of the winter. DS never got it.

@Jass: I sent dd for reasons listed above. I freaked though!! I almost wish they didn't send those notices since I'm always on the lookout for illness symptoms anyway!

We did but it's because we were leaving for Mexico and she was very sick with it last summer 3 weeks after some complications. Also I work very part time- so taking her out was not a burden- I just flexed to work at night when DH could watch T.

I'd stilll send my LO. Might get sick anyway and then she'd be out even longer!

HFM isn't very common where we live (knock-on wood), but if a stomach bug is circulating, she's staying home!

When mine were in daycare and we got that notice I would still send. Could have already been exposed anyway. Btw, the 3 times that notice was posted for my older son he never got it.

Probably not, since you've already been exposed. But it would ultimately depend on how flexible your schedule/PTO is and the timing of it.
I've only kept my kids home as a deterrent once. It was because 3 kids had puked on a Thursday at their school, and they already had Monday off. So I figured either a) they were already going to get it and should stay home Friday, and the weekend + Monday, to avoid exposing others...or b) they hadn't encountered it yet and 4 days would hopefully be enough for the staff to clean & most of the germs to die.
We didn't end up getting that stomach bug, but it did just keep circulating for like a month, so I'm sure it was more luck than the fact that I kept them home for one day

So timely. A baby in DS class room has it. I panicked tonight at 99.7 temp, but a hour later he was normal. As long as he doesn't have a fever tomorrow morning he's going to school. The HFM baby has is not in school and he's already played with everyone else anyway.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I don't want to scare you, but my 1 year old came down with it Weds, after playing with a friend all morning. The other baby just woke up with the rash today (Monday). I was hoping he was in the clear. But I doubt keeping him home now would do much good.

@Jass: did your son contract HFM?
@Foodnerd81: oh no! what symptoms did you notice first?

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I didn't realize it was from hfm , but she was super cranky, whiny, andnot eating well at all then acting hungry and cranky soon after. I thought it was teething or something. Then I thought her eczema was getting worse (even posted about it on here). Then the spots really started and I put it all together. We don't know anyone who had it so it wasn't on my radar. And she never had a fever that I noticed.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I kept her home on Friday inspite of all the suggestions, she went yesterday and seems to be fine. Fingers crossed

@Jass: Fingers crossed!
@Foodnerd81: that sucks and sounds way more miserable than WebMD makes it seem. I'm sorry they both have it!
Yesterday his teachers cleaned and disinfected his entire room. Would have been nice if the other parent knew and notified them before the start of the day. We kept LO home on Friday due to a fever that appeared Thursday after pick up. Depending on when the HFM baby had symptoms and last attended daycare LO was exposed last week or Monday before they got around to cleaning everything. I'm hoping for the best.
