I will have dual citizenship next year, but I don't think our babies will qualify. I think there's a way for me to request the Korean citizenship because of my status, but we probably won't bother with it.

Yup, my son has it. When a baby is born abroad to an AMCIT, the baby qualifies as an AMCIT with birth abroad. He's also a Swiss citizens as it is my husband's nationality.

I am not sure if it's a good idea though, depending upon where he lives in the future. As an AMCIT, you are taxed on worldwide income and have to file a return in the US on income earned abroad. It is a pain to have to do that, because it means you have to file local taxes where you work and US taxes.

nope, just u.s. my parents had dual but had to give it up when i stayed in korea for a year, for some reason.

Still not sure about this one. Our kids will probably all be born abroad (with the exception of the first, I'm thinking), but we aren't sure if it will really be to their advantage to have dual-citizenship. On the one hand, being EU citizens with an additional passport would be incredibly useful for things like travel in countries not so friendly to Americans (DH and I always wish for EU passports when we're in places like Serbia), and also for things like free health care in the EU. However, if they have to deal with extra taxes and all that yuck, is it still worth it?

For us, it made sense to get dual citizenship to have both an American and a Swiss passport. This way, when we go to the US, DS can enter on his American passport and vice versa. We also have his Swiss passport for travelling in the EU, makes it much easier than the American passport.
Another positive is that he is entitled to have healthcare coverage in Switzerland, so even if at some point he has a terrible disease and needs treatment, an insurance company can not deny him.
As a Swiss citizen, he will also have the right to attend university free of charge, should he decide to attend here.
The big downside is the taxation on worldwide income that Americans are subject to. Once you have filed the first time, it's not a huge deal, you automatically get an extension, but you can't do it on line yet, so that's a pain and requires coordination if you owe money.

Yes, our kids will have both US and New Zealand citizenship. With their NZ citizenship they will also have easy access to Australia. Quite handy really

Based on the U.S. Department of State regulation on dual citizenship (7 FAM 1162), the Supreme Court of the United States has stated that dual citizenship is a "status long recognized in the law" and that "a person may have and exercise rights of nationality in two countries and be subject to the responsibilities of both. The mere fact he asserts the rights of one citizenship does not without more mean that he renounces the other," (Kawakita v. U.S., 343 U.S. 717) (1952). In Schneider v. Rusk 377 U.S. 163 (1964), the US Supreme Court ruled that a naturalized U.S. citizen has the right to return to his native country and to resume his former citizenship, and also to remain a U.S. citizen even if he never returns to the United States.
