We have a couple lightweight coats that are "carseat friendly" (a thick fleece and a patagonia nanopuff). We put her in one of those and then throw a blanket on her in the car if she's still cold.

If we know we'll be outside after driving, we just bring a warmer coat and change her into it. But usually we don't even need to bother (if we're just driving to the store or a family member's house).

I've been thinking about this too - we're about to go from walking everywhere (Brooklyn) to driving everywhere (NJ suburbs)....I'm telling myself getting three kids into and out of the car will be easier than wrangling them into heavy layers/strollers/carriers to walk, but I"m not so sure!!

Thinking we may just keep a cozy lap blanket in the car for each kid.....throw coats on as they hop out. With three across the back, they can't really put on coats in the car, anyway (2 are rear facing)

We live in New England and use Columbia Fleece jackets for the car (plus hats and mittens and a warm blanket that we keep in the car). It's never been an issue. If we're going to be playing outside, we'll bring winter/snow coats to change into.

We also do fleece in the car with a blanket. I usually don't put a hat and mittens on her until we arrive because she gets hot pretty quickly in the car. We also bring her warmer coat along to change into as needed.

It's annoying...

For now when it's not frigid, we try to start the car early if possible (totally want remote starter). After all the doors are closed I take of DD's jacket and put her in the carseat and throw on a blanket if needed.

When it's really cold, she will have to layer with a fleece and go into the carseat with her fleece.

I made a car seat poncho when my first son was a baby and just pulled it out again for baby #2 - it's great for just going in and out of places. For my toddler we just take his coat off in the car and then put it back on, or run to the door.

I bought a thin Columbia down coat (double trouble) that is car seat safe and he wears a hat and mittens. We also keep a blanket in the car

I live in Minnesota and have done one winter with an infant. Fleece coat in the car with warm socks and booties or shoes, blankets in the backseat to throw over if it's cold back there. I wrap her up in a blanket or throw one over the infant seat if it's really freezing and I feel like she'll be too exposed on the trip to/from the car. I keep a snowsuit in the car in case we break down and have to wait for help, and I can put it on her once we arrive at any destination where we are going to be outside for any amount of time.
